Training exercise for first responders during active shooter and mass casualty

The Sacramento State Police Department, collaborating with local first responders, will host a full-scale on-campus exercise for mutual aid and active-shooter training, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday, March 20, 2023. Training is planned for specified buildings and locations throughout campus. The goal is to better prepare Sacramento State police and other emergency personnel to respond to any large-scale critical event that could threaten the campus community. The training exercise will be scenario-based and involve live role players simulating students, faculty, and staff in crisis. Only certain portions of each building will be closed for the training.

Scenario buildings identified are:
 - Welcome Center (first floor only)
 - Tschannen Science Complex (fourth floor only)
 - Mariposa Hall (ground level, east and west side exterior stairwells up to 5th floor)
 - Benicia Hall

The campus community should be aware that a large presence of emergency and law enforcement personnel will be on campus during this training. To ensure the campus community’s safety, an abundance of training instructors, safety officers, signage, and visible caution tape will be present throughout the exercise.
Scenario trainings can be upsetting; however, the trainings are important so that campus and community safety personnel are prepared to support our campus if a real crisis were to happen. For those in need of support, please consider these Sacramento State resources:

 - Students can utilize Student Health and Counseling Services by calling (916-278-6461)
 - Employees are able to receive support from the Employee Assistance Program (800-367-7474)

The mission of the Sacramento State Police Department is to protect the life, property, and peace of mind of the students, faculty, staff and visitors of this university. We appreciate the campus community’s cooperation while we conduct this important training to ensure the continued safety of all who visit Sacramento State.
