Peipert Chosen as New Larner OB/GYN Chair |
Jeffrey Peipert, M.D., Ph.D., Clarence E. Ehrlich Professor and chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Indiana University School of Medicine and Indiana University Health, has been appointed the next chair of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences at the Larner College of Medicine and the University of Vermont Health Network, effective June 1, 2024.

Richard L. Page, M.D., dean of the Larner College of Medicine, has been elected to the administrative board of the Council of Deans by the American Association of Medical Colleges. His election emphasizes Larner’s dedication to advancing academic medicine and underscores the College’s commitment to excellence in medical education, research, and patient care.

| Dixon Invested as Amidon Chair
|
Professor and Chair of Medicine Anne Dixon, M.A., B.M.B.Ch., was invested as the E. L. Amidon, M.D.’32, Chair of the Department of Medicine on March 29. A UVM faculty member since 2001, Dixon is chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine and director of the Vermont Lung Center. She served as interim chair of medicine from fall 2022 until her appointment as permanent chair in fall 2023.

| Totality 2024 and Eclipse Safety
|
The skies were clear on Monday, April 8, 2024, and most of the UVM community only had to step outside around 3:26 p.m. to view the unique spectacle of the total solar eclipse. For weeks leading up to the event, eclipse glasses were dispensed in the thousands around campus and safety information was shared around the globe by medical experts, including those on our campus.

| ACCOLADES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Effective April 1, pulmonologist Garth Garrison, M.D., associate professor of medicine, has been appointed assistant dean for advanced integration in the Office of Medical Education at the Robert Larner, M.D., College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. In this role, he will be responsible for leading and managing the Advanced Integration level of the Vermont Integrated Curriculum.

Mark Nelson, Ph.D., University Distinguished Professor and chair of pharmacology, gave the keynote lecture at the annual Cardiovascular Day, March 5 at University of Missouri, on the topic of cerebral blood flow signaling pathways. Internationally recognized for his research on cellular communication in brain vasculature, Nelson has been recognized with more than 380 invited lectureships in the U.S. and abroad.

Nathaniel “Than” Moore, M.B.A., PA-C, a member of the Larner Class of 2024, has been honored with the 2024 ACEP/EMRA National Outstanding Medical Student Award by the American College of Emergency Physicians, in recognition of his “outstanding qualities in humanism/professionalism, leadership/service to medical organizations, community service, research, and academic achievement.”

On April 15, Larner Class of 2025 student Kae Ravichandran completed her second official Boston Marathon in the nonbinary division with a time of 2:58:16, finishing sixth in her division out of about 54 runners. To prepare, Ravichandran ran approximately 70–80 miles a week during the height of her training cycle—all while maintaining the schedule of a full-time medical student.

A Larner College of Medicine hockey team led by Ryan Trus ʼ26, Jake Bleau ʼ26, and Nick Brunette ʼ24 met players from Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine on April 7 for the annual Specimen Cup, held in honor of the late Bruce Fonda, a long-time anatomy instructor at UVM who started the school’s first intramural hockey team. Larner brought it home with a final score of 12-2.

The University Scholars Lecture Series will feature Sarah Heil, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and psychological science, speaking on “Intersections between Reproductive Health and Substance Use” on April 30 at 4:30 p.m. in Waterman Memorial Lounge.

May 6–10 marks the Larner College of Medicine’s fifth annual Professionalism Week, when we celebrate our commitment to living the tenets of the Larner Professionalism Statement across every facet of this College and recognize those exemplary individuals who display these tenets every day—including “demonstrating professionalism through integrity, accountability, compassion, altruism, and social responsibility.” Details and schedule of events here.
