The remarkable work happening across UC San Diego Health Sciences continues to attract significant media attention, reflecting the relevance and impact of our research, education, clinical care and public service. In April and May alone, Health Sciences generated nearly 1,000 news stories spanning biomedical research, public health, health sciences education and health policy.

Recent national coverage has highlighted the breadth of our expertise, including topics as varied as cancer treatment advances, a new diagnostic code for Gulf War Illness, healthy eating, Alzheimer’s disease, community health clinics and impacts to adolescent brain development.
Media engagement remains one of the most powerful ways to extend the reach of our discoveries and expertise. The 2025 UC San Diego Behind Every Breakthrough campaign demonstrated how university research powers industries, improves lives and drives innovation. The campaign video “The Importance of Federal Funding: A Patient Perspective,” produced by the Health Sciences Communications team, received multiple Telly Awards and underscored the critical importance of federal research funding by showing that, for many patients, funding cuts can have life-or-death consequences.
Health Sciences communications professionals work proactively to elevate groundbreaking research, advance institutional priorities, and position faculty as leading voices in their fields, while responding rapidly to emerging news and public health issues. The team provides support for public relations, media training, feature storytelling and more. Faculty are encouraged to share newly accepted publications, major grants, awards and other noteworthy developments as early as possible with the appropriate communications contact.
