Dear Tulane Community,
As you know, hurricane season began June 1 and lasts through November 30. The Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response has developed a comprehensive policy for weather events, including hurricanes, that may require evacuation. The university’s evacuation policy has been carefully created and refined in partnership with our colleagues from across the university, guided by the overarching goal of keeping our community safe. In part, this policy requires all members of our community to have a personal evacuation plan. As you complete your required personal evacuation plan, please keep in mind the university’s hurricane evacuation policy.
All faculty, staff, and students are required to have a personal evacuation plan that they can implement without reliance on the university. All students are expected to activate their personal evacuation plan when the university encourages the activation of personal evacuation plans. Students should promptly evacuate campus and take any valuables and pets, service animals, and emotional support animals with them. Students that are unable to activate their personal evacuation plans may, to the extent possible, receive evacuation assistance from the university.
Priority for university-assisted evacuation shall be given to on-campus students with financial needs, disability and accesses and functional needs (DAFN), international students, and other students that cannot activate a personal evacuation plan.
To assist students with implementing their personal evacuation plans, the university may provide shuttles to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport if resources are available, and it is safe to do so. For hurricane evacuations, this may begin several days before the storm’s landfall and continue as long as circumstances permit.
The full evacuation policy can be found here in the policy library under Emergency Preparedness & Response. It is the responsibility of all members of the Tulane community to familiarize themselves with this policy.
Students, please update your personal evacuation plan in Gibson. Examples of personal evacuation plans are:
- Travel by air to the city you are from or a city where you have friends or relatives you could stay with for several days.
- Be picked up from campus by your parents, friends, or relatives.
- Evacuate with friends or roommates.
To learn more about Tulane University hurricane preparedness you can watch this video as well as visit the Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response website. If you need assistance creating your personal evacuation plan, please reach out to emergencyprep@tulane.edu.
Thank you for your compliance with this policy and for doing your part to be hurricane ready.
Respectfully,
Office of Emergency Preparedness & Response
