The Broadway Tunnel is now expected to fully close for ONE day on Sunday, Aug. 16, before the project begins an approximately 14-month partial closure with one lane open in each direction.

The Public Works Commission has approved the construction contract for the Chinatown library project, with construction expected to begin in fall 2026.

Upcoming construction activities and traffic impacts: |
Bridge demolition work is expected to take place from Aug. 1 to 15. From Aug. 1 to 10, crews will remove the pedestrian bridge over Kearny Street and the Hilton Hotel connection. From Aug. 10 to 15, crews will complete bridge removal on the park side of Kearny Street.

- July 30 to 31: Early demolition prep with partial closures on Kearny Street. Sidewalks remain open.

Aug. 1, 1:00 a.m. to Aug. 3, 5:00 a.m.: Bridge removal over Kearny Street (ZONE 2). Kearny Street (between Clay and Washington) and Portsmouth Square Garage closed. Local business access will remain available.

Aug. 3 to 7: Removal of the bridge section connected to the Hilton Hotel (ZONE 1), with partial lane and sidewalk closures near the work area.

Aug. 8, 1:00 a.m. to Aug. 10, 5:00 a.m.: Column removal on the west side of Kearny Street. Kearny Street (between Clay and Washington) and Portsmouth Square Garage closed. Local business access will remain available.

Aug. 10 to 15: Partial lane closure on Kearny Street and west-side sidewalk closure as crews complete demolition inside Portsmouth Square Park (ZONE 3).

- 8月10日至15日： 乾尼街部分行車線及西側人行道將會封閉，施工人員將在花園角內完成餘下拆卸工程（ZONE 3 區域）。

For the duration of this work, expect construction vehicles, lane closures, slower traffic, temporary “No Parking | Tow Away” zones and pedestrian detours along this section of Kearny Street. Please follow directions from on-site flaggers and posted signs, and allow extra travel time due to possible construction delays. Call 311 for questions about parking tickets or towed vehicles.

Join the project team on the second Friday of each month at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of Walter U. Lum Place and Washington Street. Get construction updates, ask questions, and share feedback.
Interpretation services will be available in Chinese at all office hours. For other language services or accessibility requests, please contact Noah Levy, project manager, at noah.levy@sfgov.org at least 48 hours before the meeting. Late requests will be honored if possible.

FULL CLOSURE | AUG. 16, 7 a.m. – AUG. 17, 5 a.m.

During the full closure, crews will restripe roadways, install traffic control devices and install protective decking above Broadway on the east side of the tunnel during construction.

PARTIAL CLOSURE | STARTING AUG. 17

Following the full closure, the south-side bore (eastbound) will close for approximately 7 months, with the north-side bore (westbound) carrying one lane of traffic in each direction.
- The north-side bore will then close for approximately 7 months, with the south bore carrying one lane in each direction.

During the partial closure, crews will begin hazardous materials abatement and related tunnel work inside the eastbound bore. Interior hazardous materials abatement also will continue inside the building.
- Expect traffic delays during peak travel times. Drivers who want to avoid delays can use the local and regional detour routes established for the full closure.

隧道全面封閉 | 8月16日上午7時至8月17日清晨5時

- 全面封閉期間，施工人員將重新劃設道路標線、安裝交通管制設施，並於隧道東側入口搭建施工防護平台。

- 高峰時段或有交通延誤。駕駛人士如欲避免延誤，請改用附近及區域繞行路線。

The Public Works Commission approved the construction contract for the library project at its July 23 hearing. The contractor, S.J. Amoroso Construction CO. LLC, was selected through the City’s competitive bidding process based on best value for the work.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2026. Additional updates will be shared as the project moves into the construction phase.
