EAST AND WEST tonight!

EAST AND WEST film still
Austria, 1923, Ivan Abramson & Sidney M. Goldin

In EAST AND WEST, Molly Picon, star of 1920s Yiddish theater, plays the daughter of a rich, assimilated American who is invited to a family celebration in an Eastern European shtetl. Though her brash behavior alienates the locals, she is admired by a shy orthodox Talmudic scholar. Molly realizes too late that, during a wedding that she thinks is a joke, she has actually been married. This charming comedy also features Picon lifting weights and boxing, teaching young villagers to shimmy and stealing away from services to gorge herself before sundown on Yom Kippur. Shown with a live original score by master silent film pianist Donald Sosin and violinist Alicia Svigals. English subtitled Intertitles. 82 min. Please use Entrance C.

Live score by Donald Sosin & Alicia Svigals. Presented as part of the Cleveland Silent Film Festival. Special admission $25/$20.

BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL

BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL film still
USA, 2026, David Kittredge

After the success of Point Blank and Deliverance, Warner Brothers offered director John Boorman the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to helm the sequel to their smash hit, The Exorcist. The result was one of the biggest disasters in movie history that nearly ended Boorman’s filmmaking career. BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL is a deep dive not only into the making of The Exorcist II: The Heretic, but into the incredible career of one of our greatest filmmakers as he explores his biggest creative misstep. "Exceptional…entertaining… easily one of the best movies about the making—and unmaking—of a movie I have ever seen." –Deadline. 112 min.

ON THE SEA

ON THE SEA film still
USA, 2025, Helen Walsh

Coming out is never easy. It’s especially hard for Jack, a man who has lived his life married to a woman in a small fishing village in Wales. When Jack meets Daniel, a new-to-town fisherman, he finds that he can no longer deny who he truly is. Writer/director Helen Walsh's ON THE SEA deftly handles this love story about being brave enough to face your truth. "[The film] may not set out to surprise, but it traces the expected, anguished coming-out arc with rare honesty and frank, bristly sensual abandon." – Variety. 111 min.

USA, 1993, Trey Parker

Long before they were nominated for an Oscar for South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut or won their Tonys for The Book of Mormon, Trey Parker and Matt Stone created the low-budget cult musical CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL about a miner whose expedition takes a dark turn. Never ones to shy away from a catchy tune or a questionable joke, Parker and Stone proved early on that they knew just the right balance to strike with their comedy. 95 min.
