Access to Campus Buildings will be Tightened Between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. During World Cup

Dear Jayhawk,

As part of KU’s efforts to ensure a more secure environment during the World Cup, most academic and administrative buildings on the Lawrence campus will not be open to the public overnight, generally between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m., from June 1 to Aug. 1.

This change to campus security will impact our campus community in several significant ways:

  • Before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m., impacted buildings will only be accessible with KUIDs and through entrances with key card readers. The KU Smart Map shows the locations of key card readers for each building on campus. On that page, click “Card Access outside doors” on the drop-down menu to see where key card readers are located.
  • Students who have classes after 5 p.m. will be given access to the class-specific building through their KUID cards. If student employees need access to a campus building outside of regular business hours, their supervisor should work with Locks, Access & Security Technology Services to authorize access for their student employee.
  • Anyone with a KUID card issued before May 2017 or without a card due to loss, theft or damage will need a new card if they need to access buildings outside of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The KU Card Center provides free replacements for any KUID four years or older. To request a new card go to the Card Center's website.

Several campus buildings with high public traffic will offer open access during their regular summer hours, including museums, libraries, summer dining locations, the Jayhawk Welcome Center and the 1502 Building. The Dole Human Development Center will stay open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to allow for childcare drop-off and pick-up.

Individuals with questions can email KU Operations at kuoperations@ku.edu.

We understand that this change in campus security will create challenges and require adjustments in daily routines. However, these efforts are necessary to provide a more secure environment at a time when our region is expected to attract more than 650,000 visitors from around the world. These temporary protective measures will be lifted after World Cup activity has concluded.

Thank you for your partnership.
