A Building remodel a smashing success

Have you ever wondered what the building at the top of campus was as you speed down the 64th Street hill?

It's the A Building!

What was once an elementary school hub, complete with a playground, back in the early aughts was transformed into a storage area.

The school started to open it back up slowly over the last few years with a few classes on top of the hill.

But with surging enrollment this year, we invested money to refurbish multiple classrooms and reopen them.

The A Building's top floor is now our Bible Hub - with Religion Department Chair Matt Richey, Middle School Bible Teacher Lydia Kellar and High School Bible Teacher Mike Lundy are all located on top of the hill.

If you haven't had a chance to visit those classrooms, you certainly will want to climb the steps (it's a workout!) to check them out next time you are on campus.

A huge shoutout to our new maintenance and facilities director Jacob McGehee for all the hard work he did on the building the last few months.

Help us kick off the year in prayer

The community is invited to our newest tradition: Convocation to kick off the year.

From 8-8:20 a.m. in the gym Tuesday, Religion Department Chair Matt Richey will lead us in a time of prayer to help annoint the upcoming 2023-24 school year.

Meet our new Elementary School Administrative Assistant!

We are pleased to announce Anna Kessel as our new Elementary School Administrative Assistant.

You likely recognize Anna, who has been an active volunteer on our campus the last few years. Her husband, Craig, also was the Board of Directors Chairperson and just recently wrapped up his tenure on the BOD.

Anna attended Northwest Christian College and South Eugene High School. She has worked previously as a receptionist at Northwest Church as a receptionist and administrative assistant and worked at World Vision as a communications assistant.

Anna replaces Kim Young and Carrie Foster.

We can't wait for you to meet Anna!

Meet our new Kindergarten Teacher

We are pleased to announce that Sarah Kamalu is our new Kindergarten teacher.

Sarah is a 2022 graduate of Corban University, where she received a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She is currently pursuing her Master's in Elementary Education from Central Washington University. She graduated from Curtis High School in University Place.

Sarah attends Sunset Bible Church. She worked as a substitute teacher in the Salem Keizer School District, filling in for first grade and kindergarten in 2021-22. She spent last year as a first-grade teacher in the Clover Park School District.

Meet our new Interim Middle School Science Teacher

We are pleased to announce that Ruth Druliner is our new Interim Middle School Science Teacher.

Ruth comes to Tacoma from North Carolina and is stationed at JBLM with her husband.

She has previous experience as a paralegal and has an AA in Applied Science, Aerospace Ground Equipment Technology from te Community College of the Air Force in 2011. She added a Bachelor of Arts in History for Secondary Education from Grand Canyon University in 2017 and received a paralegal certificate from Duke in 2022.

Meet our new board member Terry Franzen

Terry is the Executive Account Manager for 3M Company. He has been involved in the office products industry for 41 years. “God has blessed me with the opportunity to work for great companies and with wonderful people,” he said.

Terry attends Sunset Bible Church with his spouse Deborah. They have four adult children: Joshua, Matthew, Catherine and Andrew.

“I wanted to join the board because of God’s leading,” Terry said. “I believe in the mission of Sound Christian Academy. I wanted to serve, to hopefully, prayerfully, make a positive impact, to God’s glory.”

Meet our new board member Ryan Frederick

Ryan is a full-time author and content producer for his marriage and family ministry and also serves as the Acquisitions Editor for Lion Press, his local publishing company.

Previously he spent four years doing Energy Conservation Resource Management and Design and Construction Management for the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. He also ran a web and marketing business for 10 years.

He has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and Marketing from the University of Washington, and is currently studying for a Masters of Religion degree at Westminster Theological Seminary.

He and his wife Selena attend the Evangelical Reformed Church in Tacoma. They have four children: Dela, Clementine, Louisa and Sunny.

“As someone who was born, raised, and spent (nearly) all my life in Tacoma, I have a great desire to see good, solid Christian education in our community, which we know and love,” Ryan said.

Drive line changes for Elementary School

Elementary Students (PK-5) will all be released at 2:30 p.m. this year to expedite parent pick up.

We are aware this will take a little bit of adjustment time for returning families, so we ask for grace and patience as these changes are put into place.

You will be given a mirror window tag with your student’s last name and grades written on it. We may not have those ready for the first few days of school. Until then, we ask that you please write that information (Last name and student(s) grade level) on a sheet of paper, large enough for us to be able to read, and place it in your windshield so it is visible upon arrival.

Students will no longer be waiting in the CAPS building to be picked up. They will be waiting inside the classrooms as well as the Elementary hallway. When you arrive, please follow the signs and pull forward as far as possible and hold up your sign. We ask that you remain IN your car until your student(s) are brought out to you. If you need to come to the front office, please see Samantha Messersmith at the front door. If you need to speak to a teacher, please make an appointment with them ahead of time.

Any elementary student not picked up by 2:45pm will be sent to the Before and After School Care program.
