NEWLY-RELEASED ANNUAL REPORT ON NIH IMPACT
United for Medical Research (UMR) released its annual report detailing the economic impact of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding. The report found that each $1 of NIH research funding in FY25 generated $2.57 in economic activity, with nearly $37 billion in grants supporting almost 391,000 jobs and producing more than $94 billion nationwide. UMR also released updated state‑level data showing broad economic benefits across all states and the District of Columbia. In North Carolina, the NIH awarded $1.71 billion in grants and contracts during FY25 that directly supported 18,537 jobs and $4.29 billion in economic activity. The report noted, however, that increased use of multi‑year funding resulted in 5,564 fewer grants awarded in FY25 compared with FY24, with at least 19 states and D.C. experiencing award declines of 10 percent or more.
