Apex Selected as Home for New NC Children’s Health Campus

North Carolina Children’s Health (NC Children’s), a partnership between UNC Health and Duke Health, has selected Apex as the site for the Carolinas’ only freestanding, independent children’s hospital. The 230-acre campus will include a 500-bed hospital, behavioral health facilities, outpatient services and a research and education hub, creating around 8,000 jobs. Integrated into the Veridea mixed-use community, the project is expected to break ground in 2027 with a six-year construction timeline.

Research Saves Lives: A Duke Clinical Trial Provides a Lifeline for Lung Cancer Patient

A groundbreaking clinical trial at Duke is giving new hope to patients with advanced lung cancer, including Alfonzo Grafton, who was diagnosed with stage IV and told he likely had less than two years to live. Thanks to an NIH-funded experimental treatment that helps the immune system better attack tumors, Grafton’s cancer shrank significantly—restoring his energy, quality of life and even his ability to dance again. His story is a powerful example of how continued investment in medical research can save and transform lives.

This treatment was supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Radio Waves Riding on Optical Fibers

At the intersection of wireless and fiber-optic technologies, researchers at Duke are advancing analog radio-over-fiber systems—a promising approach to meet the rising demands of next-generation communication networks. One such effort at Duke explores how high-frequency wireless signals can be transmitted over optical fibers with minimal distortion and delay, potentially transforming how data is distributed in both dense urban and remote environments. This work, led by Duke professor Tingjun Chen, who was recently recognized with a prestigious NSF CAREER award.

Deborah Rutter Named Vice Provost for the Arts

Deborah F. Rutter, former president of the Kennedy Center, has been named Duke University’s new vice provost for the arts. A nationally recognized arts leader with nearly five decades of experience, Rutter will begin her role on September 1, succeeding John Brown. She brings a legacy of innovative arts programming and leadership, including her transformative tenure at the Kennedy Center. At Duke, she will oversee the university’s arts strategy, strengthen ties across campus and the community and expand opportunities for artistic engagement and education.
