UC Santa Barbara is honored to announce an exclusive screening of the award-winning documentary film, Outsider.
Outsider addresses both the tragedy and redemption that can result from mental illness. This complex landscape becomes personal as we learn about UC Santa Barbara alumnus and star baseball player Maury Ornest. Drafted out of college to Major League Baseball, Maury appears in the UC Santa Barbara Baseball record books for being in the top 10 of all time for walks and batting average. His life experiences encompassed baseball, schizoaffective disorder, and art. Directed by Ted Haimes and produced by Ted and Nicole Lucas Haimes, Outsider won the 2023 Audience Award for best short at the Montclair Film Festival in New Jersey.
We cordially invite you to attend this special screening and the proceeding panel discussion featuring Maury’s sister, Laura Ornest, alongside UC Santa Barbara faculty and leadership. A reception and art exhibition will follow. Proceeds from the sale of Maury’s art will benefit the Department of Art at UC Santa Barbara.

After Maury Ornest died at age 58 from heart disease, his sister and UC Santa Barbara alumna Laura Ornest discovered 1,400 original paintings in his home studio and multiple storage units, along with thousands of pages of journals.
Outsider recounts the story of a gifted baseball player whose lifelong battle with severe schizoaffective disorder began with a psychotic break in his early twenties.

Through Maury’s drawings and vibrant, whimsical paintings, interviews with family members, and extensive reflections in his thousands of pages of journals (voiced by actor/author Gary Gulman), Outsider demonstrates the deep loneliness that can burden those with serious mental illness when thoughts and emotions are out of one’s control. Outsider also reveals the many challenges faced by caregivers and family members when their loved ones’ behaviors can be volatile, disturbing and hard to predict. Outsider shows us how the power of creative expression can sustain one’s humanity.
