   HAPPY JUNETEENTH!
Monday, June 19, is Juneteenth, a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery. The news finally reached Texas two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. On June 17, 2021, it became an official federal holiday, largely due to the work of UNT alumna Opal Lee, who is widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Read about Opal Lee in the North Texan, and how UNT alumnus Jarred Howard has been working with her and other UNT connections to create the National Juneteenth Museum
Check out these events to celebrate:
The university will be closed, and classes will not be held on the holiday.

   TARRANT AREA FOOD BANK
Students who need food can stop by the free mobile pantry provided by the Tarrant Area Food Bank from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15, in Lot 20. No documents are required. Be aware that there will be heavy traffic in this area as people drive through the site. If you don’t plan to attend the event, we recommend avoiding the west side of campus during those hours.

   OPEN FOR ORIENTATION
It’s time to welcome our new Eagles! Orientation sessions began June 2 and will continue through Aug. 17, which means there will be large groups of new students around campus all summer. Orientation gives incoming students a chance to get familiar with campus, meet their classmates, learn about UNT resources and visit advisors. If you're on campus and see new students and families, be sure to welcome them to the Mean Green Family! For specific session dates and schedules, visit the Freshman Orientation and Transfer Orientation web pages.
