HAPPY JUNETEENTH!
Monday, June 19, is Juneteenth, a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery. The news finally reached Texas two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. On June 17, 2021, it became an official federal holiday, largely due to the work of UNT alumna Opal Lee, who is widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Read about Opal Lee in the North Texan, and how UNT alumnus Jarred Howard has been working with her and other UNT connections to create the National Juneteenth Museum.
Check out these events to celebrate:
- Celebrating Juneteenth: Music of Black Composers by the Orchestra of New Spain, at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15 in the Lewisville Grand Theater. Tickets are $5 for students.
- The two-day Denton Juneteenth Celebration starts at 3:45 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Fred Moore Park with live music and entertainment. The Juneteenth Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Denton Civic Center and will end with closing ceremonies at Fred Moore Park. This event is free for all to enjoy.
- Opal’s Walk for Freedom, from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, June 19, will take you from the Fort Worth Library to the National Juneteenth Museum. Register to walk with her in person or virtually.
- Bruceteria is hosting a special Juneteenth lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, June 19.
The university will be closed, and classes will not be held on the holiday.
