Early Career Cancer Research Information Session with Dr. Katrina Goddard

Early career trainees, such as junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, pre-doctoral candidates, and students, are invited to join a small audience as Dr. Goddard (Director, NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences) talks with pre-selected Moores early-career cancer researchers about NCI opportunities to support their research and/or interests on Wednesday, September 13, 2023. This is a unique experience for trainees to listen to the conversation and gain insight of the opportunities, interests, foci, and future directions of the NCI.

MRA has announced a request for proposals for pre-clinical, translational, and early clinical research to produce high impact, near-term advancements in melanoma prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Proposals will be accepted for the following awards: Team Science Award, Academic-Industry Partnership Award (for Team Science Award), Young Investigator Award, Pilot Award, Dermatology Career Development Award, and Special Opportunity Awards for Acral Melanoma, Brain Metastasis, Dermatology Technologies, Immunology, Radiation Oncology, Uveal Melanoma, and UK/Israel-based Researchers. MRA intends to support at least $11.5 million in new funding for 2023–2024.

This notice of funding opportunity invites proposals for research centers to advance cancer control equity by stimulating community-engaged, multilevel research interventions that address the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) on adverse cancer control outcomes. Each Research Center will (1) develop interventions that target the multilevel pathways by which SDOH impact adverse cancer outcomes, (2) develop measures, methods, and assess community-level SDOH, community engagement, and cancer control equity processes and outcomes, and (3) build capacity and engagement among scholars from diverse backgrounds, those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, and community partners to implement interventions that incorporate the lived experiences of those who face cancer inequities.

On August 23, 2023, a Town Hall was held to provide CTO supervisors and leadership with an overview of the new organizational structure and associated opportunities. CTO appreciates the attendance and engagement during the session.
An all-staff CTO Town Hall will be held on August 30, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. PT to provide an update on the transformation initiative and the new organizational structure. Participants can ask additional questions at this session, and CTO encourages attendance.

Prostate Cancer in the Black and African American Community: Barriers and Solutions

African American men exhibit an increased risk for developing prostate cancer, compared to white men and other men of color. Not only will one in six Black men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime, but Black men also are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with—and 2.1 times more likely to die from—prostate cancer than white men. Moreover, Black men are more likely than white men to be diagnosed with advanced disease. Against this backdrop, please join ZERO Prostate Cancer and COE virtually on August 29, 2023 to discuss barriers and solutions to prevent, find, treat, and survive prostate cancer in the Black and African American community. Members of the community, advocates, and practitioners all are welcome.

Cancer Health Equity Collaborative Workgroup Meetings

COE is excited to announce two events with its Cancer Health Equity Collaborative workgroup. The first event is scheduled for Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the American Lung Association (ALA) offices. This special in-person meet-and-greet session will feature the latest updates on ALA's lung cancer screening initiatives in San Diego County and provide an opportunity to network and connect with community partners.
The second event is the COE quarterly meeting that will take place on Thursday, September 28, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This virtual session will feature insightful presentations from COE partners at UCSF, Pink Crescent, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. COE hopes to see you at both events.

Mark your calendars for the upcoming Jackie Robinson YMCA Community Health and Resource Fair on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson YMCA (151 YMCA Way, San Diego, CA 92102). COE will provide cancer prevention education and resources and highlight prostate and ovarian cancer awareness. The fair will feature free vaccines, food distribution, health screenings, and a host of other services. The fair is entirely free and open to all members of the community.
