Kenya gained its independence from Britain in 1963. Stability has often had to be negotiated through coalition-building because of ethnic diversity and conflict. There are 70 distinct ethnic groups in Kenya, grouped under three broad linguistic groups: Bantu (relating to the Niger-Congo region), Nilotic (relating to the Nile region of Africa), and Cushite (related to Northeast Africa and the Horn of Africa). The Church of the Nazarene began work in Kenya in 1984 and immediately saw the need for education to address literacy rates in the country as well as a growing HIV/AIDS crisis and significant poverty, all related to a lack of education. Africa Nazarene University (ANU) was established not only in response to these critical issues but also to train highly competent leaders in a variety of disciplines for Kenya, Africa, and beyond. Africa Nazarene University has experienced several years of transitions in leadership, and new generations of leaders are emerging.
