Emory Ramadan 2023
March 22 - April 21, 2023
Weeknight Iftar Prayers and Dinner
The Muslim month of Ramadan spanned March 22-April 21, 2023. During this time, Emory’s Muslim community observed with daily fasting from dawn through the sunlight hours and nightly iftar communal prayers and dinner.
Weeknight iftars were hosted by OSRL, MSA, GMSC, Emory Muslim Alumni, and several Emory Schools, divisions, and units including the President's Office (pictured above) and Rollins School of Public Health (pictured below).
Please join the Emory MSA for a wonderful Eid-al-Fitr celebration on Saturday, April 22 on McDonough Field from 7:00-10:00 p.m.

Eid al-Fitr

Assalamu’alaikum, everyone. In collaboration with ICA and DooleyAfterDark, MSA is excited to host an Eid celebration this coming Saturday, April 22. Eid Al-Fitr represents the end of Ramadan - the month of fasting for Muslims. At this event, there will be performances, food, sweets and so much more. Everyone is welcome to attend. We will also have a fashion show for cultural clothes that anyone can sign up for through the RSVP link here.

Seniors Please Register: Baccalaureate Ceremony for the Class of 2023

Please wear your graduation robe; Reception with the President will follow
Baccalaureate is a multifaith spiritual ceremony of reflection and celebration on the Friday afternoon before Commencement. This includes:
- Graduating seniors sharing music, reflections, and meditations with one another
- President Fenves, School Deans, and chaplains offering their best wishes and blessings to the graduating class
- A festive reception will follow

Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir Spring Concert Recap
On Saturday, April 15, 2023, over 100 Emory community members gathered in Cannon Chapel for Voices of Inner Strength Gospel Choir's Spring Concert. The choir, under the direction of Music Director Maury Allums, shared songs and worship followed by dinner. VOIS recently celebrated over 30 years as a choir. On Saturday, we also celebrated the initial establishment of the VOIS Forever Endowment Fund, ensuring the group's place on campus for the future.

Cannon Chapel Living Mandala Garden Planting Recap
On Monday, Emory community members and students of the Emory Buddhist Club came together to replant and maintain the Living Mandala Garden outside of Cannon Chapel. This space on campus is available to all for reflection, meditation, and engagement with nature.

Staff Award of Distinction Honoree: OSRL Chief of Staff, Zachary Cole
Last week, Emory honored 14 staff members with the highest award available to staff, the Award of Distinction. OSRL's Chief of Staff, Zachary Cole, was honored this year for his work, which "has had a tremendous impact on transforming the office into a vibrant, visible and deeply intersectional program engaged with all schools and units of Emory and beyond." Mindfulness and Well-Being Circle

Mindfulness and Well-Being Circle is a space for cultivating and engaging in mindfulness practices for our individual and collective well-being. It is a place for community, rest, and learning. All are welcome to the circle for group meditations, contemplations, and reflections facilitated by Buddhist Chaplain Venerable Priya Rakkhit Sraman. Light refreshments will be provided.

"Time to Pause" Sound Bath During Finals Week
Monday, April 24, 12:30 p.m., Cannon Chapel Room 106
Join sound practitioner Noni Keyton for a sound bath on Monday at 12:30 pm in Cannon Chapel. RSVP here. To prepare for a relaxing sound bath experience, please do the following:
1. Arrive a few minutes early. Late arrivals can be disruptive for other participants and the sound practitioner.
2. Attend the sound-bath session in its entirety. Which is usually between 45 minutes to an hour.
3. Once arriving be sure to turn all electronic devices to the off position.
4. Come hydrated! Sound waves move faster through water.

The Point Recycles

Join the members of the Clifton Corridor community on Saturday, April 22 at Emory Point to celebrate Earth Month with a recycling event. Earth Month Recycling Day at Emory Point is a daylong event that invites the public to dispose of unwanted household items, providing a chance for local community members to recycle hard-to-recycle items.
Items collected range from textiles, games/toys, kitchen materials, and furniture to paints, aerosols, batteries, bulbs, and tires.

Rollin's DEI Racial Trauma Series, Part 2: Understanding Racial Trauma within Asian Communities: History, Healing, Allyship Wednesday, April 26, 2023, 12:00 p.m., Zoom

Transforming Perspectives: Embracing Transgender Advocacy through a Jewish Lens with Rabbi’s Daniel and Karen Bogard

We are excited to welcome Rabbi's Daniel and Karen Bogard as our presenters for this year's James Ross McCain Faith & Learning Lecture, "Transforming Perspectives: Embracing Transgender Advocacy through a Jewish Lens."
The Bogard's will speak on the history of transgender politics in Judaism and their personal experience of being faith leaders and parents involved in political advocacy for trans children. Their work in Missouri has been recently highlighted in the Washington Post's article on Missouri Transgender Bills.

Creative Justice Exhibit - Woodruff Library
Open now - May 13
Emory’s Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program, which pairs talented Atlanta artists with Emory professors, has yielded vivid and creative pieces that are on exhibit through May 13 in the Schatten Gallery at Emory’s Woodruff Library. Make plans to visit “Creative Justice: A Celebration of Emory’s Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program” (details and hours can be found here). This exhibit provides a survey of the work the ASJ fellows and faculty did to help students translate their learning into creative activism in the name of racial justice.

The Holy Month of Ramadan is the month of fasting during which Muslims who are physically able do not eat or drink from the first sign of dawn until sunset in honor of the first revelations to the Prophet Muhammad. The evening meal is celebrated with family.
Eid al-Fitr ('Id al-Fitr)
Thu., Apr. 20 – Sun., Apr. 23, 2023
Tradition: Islam
Also known as the Festival of the Breaking of the Fast. One of the two main Islamic festivals (the other is Eid al-Adha), this day celebrates the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It comes on the first day of the next lunar month, Shawal.
Ridvan
Thu., Apr. 20 – Tue., May 2, 2023
Tradition: Baha'i
Commemorates the 12 days that Baha'u'llah spent in the Garden of Ridvan in the last days of his exile in Baghdad, during which time he proclaimed himself as the one announced by Bab. Work is suspended for the first, ninth, and twelfth days.
