What inspired you to participate in the First Year Flames Abroad Program to Costa Rica, and how did that experience shape your perspective as a student at UIC?
"I had always wanted to study abroad but thought it was out of reach, especially after my high school language immersion program in France was canceled due to COVID-19. As a first-generation student, I didn’t realize there were other ways to study abroad without being fluent in a second language. When I received an email about the First Year Flames Abroad (FYFA) program at UIC, I saw it as a chance to connect with other first-gen students and ease my transition into college. I wasn’t sure if I’d be accepted, but the opportunity to build a community and have faculty mentors who shared similar backgrounds was a deciding factor in choosing UIC."
Having studied art history in London and now preparing for your second program in Costa Rica, how have these diverse experiences impacted your academic and personal growth?
"After participating in the FYFA program, I didn't expect to study abroad again, but a friend encouraged me to apply for the Honors College's art history program in London. With scholarships from UIC, I was able to make it happen, and the experience was transformative. Studying art history in London allowed me to connect academic theory with real-world art, while also maintaining my internship. Traveling to both London and Costa Rica has deepened my understanding of how different cultures view and respect the environment, which has influenced my career goals. These experiences have also made me more culturally aware and better equipped to engage with diverse perspectives, especially on campus. I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to study abroad, as even a short program can broaden your worldview."
What advice would you give to fellow UIC students who are hesitant to explore study abroad opportunities, especially those early in their college careers?
"Many college grads regret not studying abroad, and with only 10% of US undergraduates doing so, it’s easy to see why. My advice is to at least apply and see where it takes you—you might be surprised by the opportunities. I didn’t think I’d get accepted or find funding, but UIC made it possible, and now I feel ready for a full semester abroad. If you’re unsure about traveling, UIC’s faculty-directed programs are a great intro—they’re short-term, well-organized, and a perfect way to build confidence. Start planning early, ideally during your first year, because study abroad can truly change your perspective and enhance your college experience."

Filip began playing basketball at the age of 6 and went professional by 13, and now plays as a forward for the UIC Flames Men's Basketball Team, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Growing up, he would sneak late-night views of USA basketball games like NCAA Final Fours and NBA March Madness, fueling his love for the game. His family includes a father who is a coach, a mother who is a pediatrician, and a grandfather with a background in agriculture, all of whom have influenced his drive to succeed both academically and athletically.

What challenges did you face as an international student, and how did you overcome them?
"As an international student, one of the biggest challenges I faced was being away from my parents for a whole year during my first year of college. It was tough adjusting to life in a new country, but the size and energy of Chicago reminded me a lot of home, and there’s always something to do here. I was fortunate to be recruited by a UIC coach on a full scholarship, which gave me a clear path to focus on my academics and basketball. Additionally, the strong Serbian community in Chicago provided a sense of familiarity and support, helping me stay connected to my roots while adjusting to life in the U.S."
Looking ahead, what are your goals or plans after completing your degree?
"After graduation, my main goal is to continue pursuing professional basketball, using my skills and experiences to play at the highest level. Alongside that, I’m passionate about starting my own business, possibly a charity or an agricultural venture. Growing up, I helped my grandfather maintain and handpick raspberries on his farm, which inspired my interest in agriculture and sustainable practices. I hope to combine my love for sports with my entrepreneurial spirit, creating opportunities to give back to my community while staying connected to my roots."
If you had to capture your UIC experience in one word, what would it be?
"My experience at UIC has been AMAZING, offering me the opportunity to balance both academics and playing basketball as a forward. The chance to pursue a business management degree while competing at the collegiate level has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the Serbian community in Chicago has made me feel right at home, providing a sense of connection and familiarity. Between school, basketball, and everything else that keeps me busy, UIC has truly shaped an unforgettable college experience."
