Winter 2024 Newsletter

Though the weather-related news in Southern California as of late has revolved around atmospheric rivers and winter flooding, here at the SoCal Extreme Heat Research Hub we're still hard at work investigating extreme heat.

Since our previous newsletter, we've had several exciting updates, including a new publication, the launch of the "Cooler Communities" curriculum inspired by Heat Hub work, and a poster presentation at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco.

This edition of the SoCal Heat Hub Newsletter also features an in-depth look at how the issues of extreme heat and housing insecurity intersect in the San Diego region, written by our College Corps fellow, Nicole Fassina.

Exploring the Connection Between Extreme Heat and Housing Insecurity in San Diego County

Heat Hub science communicator and College Corps fellow Nicole Fassina spent the last few months researching the intersecting issues of extreme heat health impacts and homelessness in San Diego. She's transformed her research into an in-depth and eye-opening literature review for the Heat Hub blog. Nicole's article explores the complex socio-economic factors that contribute to homelessness in our region and discusses how this population is particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat. Research Updates

New Research Predicting Winter Extremes

New research, led by Kristen Guirguis, was published in December outlining a new model approach for predicting extreme winter weather events. Read a summary of the work on our blog.

Laney Wicker Presents at AGU

Hub PhD student Laney Wicker attended AGU to present her research focusing on the hydrologic impacts of coastal heatwaves. Read Laney's reflection on her experience here.
