Emory Report: New religious accommodation policy supports inclusive environment for university students, faculty and staff
Emory University students may request excused absences from class, rescheduled assignments and other adaptations for their religious observances under the new university-wide religious accommodation policy, which took effect Aug. 1.
“Emory University seeks to create a campus climate that is welcoming and inclusive of religious, philosophical and nonreligious diversity,” the policy states. “Emory’s Equal Opportunity and Discriminatory Harassment Policy prohibits discrimination on the basis of religion, and Emory seeks to provide reasonable accommodation for the sincerely held religious beliefs and practices of employees and students, unless such accommodation would impose an undue hardship (more than a minimal burden on university operations).”

Navaratri Garba 2022 Navaratri Garba 2022 Navaratri Garba 2022
Navaratri Garba 2022
On Saturday, September 24, over 450 community members gathered in the ESC to celebrate Navaratri, hosted by the Hindu Students Association (HSA). Navaratri is an annual festival that began on September 26 and ends on October 5. The festival honors the goddess Durga. HSA marked the holiday with Garba, an Indian regional dance form in which people perform traditional, joyful steps in a circular formation to celebrate the divine feminine. In the United States and in other diaspora communities, celebrating Navaratri with the Garba dance has become a staple for many Hindus and Indians, even though the dance is originally from the Gujarat region of India. Saturday night's festivites included food, community, and a performance by Emory SaRaas.
Congratulations to the HSA on a successful event and thank you to all who came out, including President Fenves. See the full photo album here

October 1-15, 2022, Woodruff Library Level 2
Arturo Contreras, a fourth-year student majoring in Latin American and Caribbean Studies, curated the exhibit.
Growing up in a Mexican-immigrant household in small-town Monetta, South Carolina, gave Contreras a view of the rural U.S. South from a unique cultural perspective. It was not until his third year at Emory that he had the tools and frameworks to compose what he experienced into words. He is thankful for the resources Emory’s Latinx community — faculty, staff, and peers — provided to himself and others.
