NDAA FINAL VOTE EXPECTED IN SENATE TODAY

Following bipartisan support in a procedural vote on Monday, the Senate is expected to pass the National Defense Authorization Act this afternoon. The bill passed the House last week and is expected to head to President Biden for his signature. The passage of the bill today clears the Senate's calendar for dealing with the end-of-year funding package once that moves through the House.

FEDERAL FUNDING BILL FINAL DRAFT EXPECTED TODAY

The House has reportedly agreed to final language on their year-end funding bill. The legislation will include a continuing resolution (CR) extending funding to March 2025 while also providing over $100 billion to emergency aid for disaster relief. Additionally, as reported by POLITICO Pro, the final legislation of 2025 is also expected to include a bill to restrict U.S. investment in China, extension of expiring health programs and $10 billion in economic assistance to farmers.

HOUSE AI TASK FORCE RELEASES REPORT

Earlier today, the bipartisan House Task Force on Artificial Intelligence released its long-anticipated report after nearly a year of compiling stakeholder input. The report contains 66 key findings and 89 recommendations, with a goal to serve as a blueprint for future congressional action related to AI technologies. Some key recommendations include continued investment in fundamental AI science, broadening pathways into AI workforce and codifying the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR).

FIVE-YEAR EXTENSION FOR U.S.-CHINA SCIENCE AGREEMENT WITH FOCUS ON BASIC RESEARCH

The U.S. and China have extended their science and technology cooperation agreement for five more years, focusing on non-sensitive areas such as environmental and health research. This renewal comes with new safeguards to address concerns over security and intellectual property.

MICHIGAN REPUBLICAN SELECTED TO LEAD EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Tim Walberg (R-MI) has been elected as the new chair of the House Education and Workforce Committee. Rep. Walberg has been serving on the Committee for 16 years and will replace outgoing chair Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC). In media interviews, Rep. Walberg has stated his higher education priorities as chair will be to focus on college affordability, increase apprenticeships and internships, and make Pell Grants available for short-term workforce training programs.
