FALL 2024 SEMESTER STARTUP

Whether you are returning to the U to teach this fall, or just beginning your teaching career here, the Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence has several resources to help you get ready to teach this fall. Read on for more information about syllabus and course prep, our Annual Teaching Symposium, and more.

SYLLABUS AND COURSE SETUP

Just a reminder, PPM 6-100 requires the following for ALL U of U courses:

  • Syllabi must be posted at least one week prior to the beginning of the semester (or by August 12).  These instructions will guide you in creating a hyperlink to your syllabus from the course schedule.
  • Faculty should provide reasonable accommodations to students who cannot attend classes due to sanctioned University activities, University closures, or sudden illness or emergencies.

The Center for Teaching Excellence website has several Syllabus Design resources, including a streamlined Syllabus Template as well as updated lists of required and recommended University policy statements and resources for students.

If you have questions about how HB261 affects your teaching, MBECTE has compiled an HB261 Teaching Resource page with information compiled from central administration, USHE, and more.

You can also request a consult with CTE staff for more in-depth course and pedagogy questions. Digital Learning also offers a Pre-Semester Checklist for getting started in Canvas, as well as several Canvas Help links.

DIGITAL LEARNING TECHNOLOGY

AI AND INSTRUCTION

We are excited to announce some updates to our CTE site on AI and Instruction.

It is crucial to clearly communicate your expectations regarding AI usage to your students; please ensure that your syllabus contains explicit AI usage statements (examples are available on our AI website) and that your assignments include clear instructions and rubrics to guide students appropriately.

In addition to information about syllabus statements, recommended AI tools, news, and instructional guidelines, we have added new information to our site like:

  • links to MLA, APA, Chicago, and ACS citation websites to help students properly cite their use of AI
  • more suggestions on how you can integrate AI into your assignments and assessments
  • data security information for using AI

Are you integrating AI into your pedagogy in interesting and innovative ways? We’d love to hear about it and support you!

TEACHING WITH AI

Prepare for a New Era of Human Learning

How can you ensure students achieve the outcomes you developed for your courses, while also preparing them for a world where AI competency is increasingly expected? Responding to this question is the key purpose of Teaching with AI, a four-part series of online workshops designed to prepare faculty for a new era of human learning.

Don't miss your chance to participate in any—or all—of these workshops, which will feature current-to-the-moment information regarding generative AI and its possibilities for higher education. You will also receive guidance on how to apply AI within your own learning contexts between workshop sessions. Sharing, interaction, and exploration will be hallmarks of this hands-on workshop series.

Each workshop will focus on a specific topic:

  • Working with AI for Teaching and Learning | September 3
  • Cheating, Detection, and Policy | September 10
  • Assignments and Writing | September 17

Register for all four workshops and receive a discounted rate plus a complimentary copy of Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning, written by José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson.
