What’s Up Cameron Crazies!!
The moment you’ve all been waiting for…

Fall Campout!
Fall Campout will be held from Friday, October 4th at 6 PM to Sunday, October 6th at 10 AM in Krzyzewskiville!
This event allows graduate and professional students a chance to win the opportunity to purchase a season ticket to all home Duke Men’s Basketball games. Please read through this entire email.
All questions regarding campout should be directed to the Co-Chairs email, which is Bball.Cmte@gmail.com
1. REGISTRATION

The Co-Chairs will send out an email from our listserv on September 1st with an online registration form, and clear instructions on how to register for campout. Registration will open on September 1st immediately upon sending out that email. Registration will close on September 20th at midnight. Please join our listserv by filling out the survey if you haven’t already: Campout Listserv Sign-up

Registration fee: $25 (for both attending and non-attending)

Season ticket price: $300

2. ATTENDING VS. NON-ATTENDING CAMPERS

Campout is broken into two categories: attending campers and non-attending campers. In either case, you must be an active graduate or professional Duke student to participate.

Attending campers: Attending campers are individuals who will be able to attend for the vast majority of the entire weekend. Random attendance checks will be called over the course of the weekend, and each individual student will be responsible for making their own checks. The more checks you make, the better your chances are of winning the lottery. Further, the weekend will be filled with fun, food, and music, as well as attending-camper-only games and competitions where winners will receive exclusive prizes! (Not tickets)

Non-attending campers: Unable to attend campout that weekend? Won’t be able to make most of the checks? No worries, the non-attending campout option is for you! Non-attending campers will complete the same registration form as attending campers, but will not have to participate in any aspect of campout weekend or check-ins. However, non-attending campers will have their own set of tasks and a separate lottery system to participate in.

Registration as a non-attending camper will automatically get you 1 entry into the non-attending lottery.
In the weeks leading up to campout, non-attending campers will have the opportunity to gain up to 3 additional entries, for a maximum of 4 total entries into the non-attending lottery.
These additional entries can be earned either by attending any Duke Women’s Soccer, Men’s Soccer, Volleyball, or Field Hockey home games up until Saturday, October 5th, or by participating in one of our numerous community service events that will take place in the weeks leading up to campout. At least 1 of these 3 additional entries MUST BE A COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENT. Without community service, you may only receive a maximum of 2 additional entries. NOTE: Receiving all 4 non-attending lottery entries will not result in better lottery odds than being an attending camper, but will give the same lottery odds as the average attending camper.

Prior to attending a community service event, you must register for the event using the registration form which will be sent out to the listserv at a later date.
To receive your additional lottery entry for your participation in either a sporting event listed above or community service event, you will need to fill out and submit the proof of attendance form which will be sent out at a later date.
This form will require that you submit a picture of yourself with a clearly distinguishable background and unobstructed view of your face as proof of attendance, and a picture of your Duke ID for proof of identification.

Here is the list of community service events which you will be able to register for to fulfill the community service event requirement:
  • Healthy Harvest workday
  • Durham Rescue Mission
  • TROSA
  • Keep Durham Beautiful

Additional information about the community service opportunities will be sent out from the Co-Chairs to the listserv and will include exact dates, times, and locations as well as the community service registration form. Once that information is sent out, please register for the community service event(s) of your choosing. There will be limited enrollment for many events, and therefore will be staffed on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you register but cannot go, please email the co-chairs immediately to notify us of this change.

3. TENTING GROUPS

Students may have a tenting group of up to 12 students. Ideally, a group of 7-10 students will occupy one campsite space. If your group is smaller than 7 students, you will likely share a campsite space with another small group. Please bring appropriately sized tents if possible. As a reminder, tenting groups are for campsite organization, communication, and safety. Each individual will be responsible for making their own checks. There will be no group checks allowed (Ex: one person from group 15 can’t check in for the entire tenting group).

Each group will assign one person as their “Tent Captain”. If you do not have a group, you must be your own Tent Captain. Tent Captains will be responsible for relaying important information to the group and will also be the group’s primary point of contact leading up to and during campout.

Social Host Training

Every Tenting Group must have at least their Tent Captain successfully complete Grad Student and Campout Social Host/Safety Training Session.

If for some reason the Tent Captain is unable to attend, please contact the Co-Chairs with the name and contact of the alternate person from that Tenting Group who plans to attend. Ideally, the Tent Captain should be chosen based on availability to attend this training.

There will be 3 of these training sessions available to attend. You only need to attend 1 session to complete the training. There will be one session on September 11th from 7:30-9:30pm and one on September 25th from 7-9pm held in the Duke Student Wellness CenterRoom 148. A third training will be held on September 23rd in the Divinity School, Westbrook 0016 from 7-9pm.
You must register for the session you would like to attend via Duke Groups Website. These sessions are different from the normal social host training that some students may already be familiar with. However, if you are already trained this year as a social host, please contact the Co-Chairs email to let us know.

Failure to comply will result in your Tenting Group’s disqualification from attending campout.

4. COUNTDOWN TO CRAZINESS
Join us in kicking off the season and Campout with Countdown to Craziness!

We are excited to announce that Countdown to Craziness will be held on Friday, October 4th and will mark the beginning of Campout! Stay tuned for more details to come about kickoff events and when to arrive!

5. ATTENDING-CAMPER-ONLY EVENTS

Food and Fun: We heard you all loud and clear last year about the things you all liked, and the things we could do better.
First, ALL ATTENDING CAMPERS will be fed for a late-night snack Friday, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. More importantly, Saturday night’s dinner will be a Food Truck Event (sponsored directly by our very own student government, GPSG) where each attending camper is given one free meal ticket to use at the food truck of their choosing. Details on meal ticket distribution and a list of trucks will be coming out soon.

Other exciting events over the weekend will be announced soon! Stay tuned for links to sign up for each of these events. Lastly, attending campers will receive a special edition Campout Fall 2024 T-shirt!

To keep things fair to all students, an email will be sent out after registration closes to all attending campers with links to sign up for each of these events.
7. REDUCING WASTE AT CAMPOUT

Buy Secondhand: We encourage campers to purchase tents and other items secondhand! Check places like Facebook Marketplace, Duke List, or ask around for students who tented last year if they may know anyone selling at tent. You can also rent equipment from the Duke gym.

Choose to Reuse: Plan on bringing a reusable water bottle - we'll have plenty of water stations for you to fill up! You can also bring reusable plates/cutlery to help reduce the need for single-use items.

Leave No Trace: Let's keep our beautiful campus clean - plan on "packing out" anything you bring to campout. Check out this guide for tips on how to resell, donate, or repair camping gear.

If you think of other ways we can reduce waste at campout, please email Lauren Ng, GPSG Director of Environment & Sustainability (lauren.ng@duke.edu)

8. INTERESTED IN HELPING OUT WITH CAMPOUT AND/OR BEING AN USHER?

The Duke Basketball Graduate Ushers are a dedicated team of grad students who LOVE Duke Basketball almost as much as we LOVE bringing the absolute best Duke Basketball experience to the graduate student body! We work home basketball games to safely and fairly organize the movement of a thousand students to provide the uniquely Duke experience of Cameron Indoor. We are also responsible for creating events like campout and much more! We work hard, we work as a team, and we have fun while doing it.

If this sounds like you, then we have good news! There are openings for current grad students to join the usher team! It should be noted that the work doesn’t pay, since we view this as a service to our graduate community. And while ushering does come with some perks like game attendance, it also requires a significant time commitment throughout a season that runs through fall finals, winter break, and most of the spring semester.

With that being said: whether you are definitely interested in being an usher, or if you are on the fence about the decision, we recommend working shifts during campout. Campout is a great way to test the waters if you want to learn more about usher roles and responsibilities or if you simply want to help make campout a fun, successful event! We have numerous supportive roles and shifts to be filled with a wide range of responsibilities and time commitments. If you are interested in signing up for this, please check out our website to read more about the roles and fill out the form to volunteer for campout to join our team.

Feel free to contact us via email or social media if you have any questions or just follow our social media for the most up-to-date campout/basketball related info.
