Last week, our campus experienced a public safety incident - one that we hope never to face again. In the days since, two things have become clear. First, our emergency protocols operated as intended, and we are deeply grateful to UMass Boston Department of Public Safety and Police, the Boston Police Department, and our partner agencies for their swift, coordinated, and professional response.
Second, as is true for all universities and organizations, there is always an opportunity to learn more. While many aspects of last week’s response were effective, we also recognize the importance of continuous improvement. We are taking this moment as an opportunity to further strengthen our protocols and action plans to ensure the highest levels of preparedness for our community.
At UMass Boston, the Office of Emergency Management is dedicated to the safety of the Beacon community through ongoing planning, training, and emergency exercises in partnership with the Department of Public Safety and Police.
We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to take advantage of available resources and training on how to respond during a campus emergency.

Building Evacuation Plans
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety has published building evacuation plans for every campus building. Take the time to review the plans for any buildings you frequent. Plan ahead by identifying at least two evacuation routes from those locations. Practice evacuating using both routes and identify a location where you can secure or shelter-in-place.
