U Leaders’ Statement About International Student Visas

On April 9, University of Utah leaders sent an email to the campus community regarding international students who have had their visas revoked. The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) staff in the Office for Global Engagement will continue to monitor federal immigration databases and communicate with student visa holders to provide the most up-to-date guidance for maintaining their immigration status. They also will reach out to those who have been identified by federal authorities as no longer qualifying for student visas to provide support. In the meantime, university leaders are asking faculty, department chairs and deans to be flexible with all our international students as they complete coursework this semester. We urge you to reach out to friends and colleagues who may be struggling, particularly those who are facing unique challenges and upheaval in their lives.

Leaping from Spring to Summer Sessions

In hopes of making your transition from spring semester to summer sessions a little easier, the team at Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence has prepared some resources to help you get ready for the start of summer semester.

Some reminders:

  • Student course feedback for spring opens on April 15 and closes on May 6. We have found that response rates (and therefore the usefulness of the data) improve when instructors take time in class to explain the purpose of feedback, how it is used, and that it is completely anonymous. Refer to our SCF Instructor Quick Start page for tips on improving response rates and more useful information.
  • Final grades are due on Monday, May 12 for the Spring 2025 semester. It is imperative that all grades are submitted by the due date, including term grades (A-E, CR/NC, V, EU), Incompletes, or “T” grades. A quick reference guide, training manual, and other grading information are available online to assist you with grading. If you have any questions or anticipate that you will not be able to meet the grading due date, please contact registration@utah.edu or call 801-581-8969 for assistance.
  • In compliance with HB261, USHE requires for all mandatory U of U courses that instructors post course syllabi that include course outcomes and learning objectives, course expectations for earning credit and grades, required and recommended readings, and a general description of the subject matter of each topic or discussion in a preliminary course schedule. Per USHE requirements regarding HB261, this information must be made available to students every semester, two weeks in advance of classes starting. For the Summer 2025 semester,  all instructors are required to post core syllabi by April 28, 2025.

The Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence (MBECTE) has prepared a Syllabus Design Page containing a core syllabus template and instructions on how to post a syllabus to the class schedule via CIS. This process will create a hyperlink to the syllabus within the class schedule. MBECTE has created a webpage listing up-to-date university policies and resources for required syllabi posting, as well as additional syllabus information and suggestions.

Still have questions?

  • If you have questions about syllabus content requirements, you are welcome to email us or schedule a consult with a team member from MBECTE.
  • If you’re experiencing technical difficulty with posting your syllabus to CIS, contact: registrar@utah.edu

You can also request a consult with CTE staff for more in-depth course and pedagogy questions. Digital Learning Technologies also offers a Pre-Semester Checklist for getting started in Canvas, as well as several Canvas Help links.

CTE Opportunities for Faculty

  • For the 2025-26 academic year, Martha Bradley Evans Teaching Fellows will focus on “Teaching Digital Natives: Supporting the Next Generation with Understanding and Compassion.” Gen Z learners, born between 1997 and 2012, are frequently called digital natives; technology is infused into nearly every aspect of their lives. This generation bore the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on education, and they are coming of age amidst tremendous social upheaval. As a result, Gen Z has been also described as more well-informed about current events than previous generations. We are seeking proposals for pedagogy projects that innovate education in ways that expand upon students’ application of digital learning skills and their awareness of current events, with the hope of fostering workforce-ready technological skills and compassion in University of Utah students.

For more information, see our Teaching Fellows page and application link. Deadline       is May 15.

  • CTE is searching for a new Associate Director! The position is open to tenured and career-line faculty and involves a .5FTE commitment to CTE. The Associate Director works closely with the Director and CTE Team to coordinate our graduate student training opportunities, manage incoming requests, and more. If you’re interested, apply HERE. For more information, you can email the CTE director.

University Communications has created a University of Utah Facts and Figures page that includes notable rankings (typically top 10 or higher) and stats related to enrollment, student success, campus life, research and innovation, service and community impact, health care, athletics, alumni, operations and sustainability, arts and community assets, and our surrounding community and state. They have also created a downloadable, editable PowerPoint template with highlights from the above information that can be used and adapted when giving presentations to external audiences or new audiences at the U. That template, along with other U of U templates, photos, and more, is available here, behind a Duo firewall.
