Helen Shelden, customer response representative for Parking and Transportation Services (PATS), has worked at UTA for almost nine years. She enjoys helping people by guiding them through the processes of purchasing a permit, paying a citation, and finding where to park on campus. She patiently works with visitors, students, and employees to resolve their issues, in an effort to create a positive University experience for all.
Shelden says that her favorite aspect of working at UTA is the people she works with, especially her coworkers in PATS.
“We work together and ask each other questions," she says. "We depend on each other.”
Shelden continues to strengthen her communication skills through frequent professional development on topics such as customer service, problem solving, and listening skills. In the last academic year, Shelden handled 76% of the 6,594 calls that PATS answered.
“Helen is often the one who helps customers with their pressing issues, whether they forgot to arrange parking for their event, got a ticket, or don't know where to go to park," says Greg Hladik, executive director of auxiliary services. “She answers each of those questions as if it were the first time they have been asked— with care, kindness, and grace. She is the voice of the department, and for thousands of people who only interact with our office during their visit, she is the voice of UTA.”
Outside of work, Shelden enjoys reading mystery novels written by J.A. Jance, Catherine Coulter, John Grissom, and Sue Grafton. She also spends weekends traveling with her husband of 51 years to visit their son in Wichita Falls, which is where the couple met while she was a student at Midwestern State University and he was stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base.
