Dearincoming Public Health major 

It is Week 1!!! Classes have begun throughout campus. Check your enrollments in TSS (building codes may not show on your Booking Report, but can be found on the Schedule of Classes)!

What's in this e-mail? 

Advising info (drop-ins IN PERSON TODAY!), workshops for FA26 prospective transfers and FA26 entering students, job opportunity in the BSPH, enrollment/booking reminders, degree audit updates, major change reminders, Fall event reminders, etc.

Elisa has IN PERSON advising hours TODAY (10:30-12:30 pm) in the BSPH Advising Office (2nd floor Pepper Canyon Hall, in the suite next to 240). When you enter the suite, please sign in using the QR code at the front desk and have a seat. You will be called back to Elisa's office.

As always, visit the BSPH Advising page for detailed information about making an appointment (released weekly on Wednesdays), a calendar including drop-in hours, and a link to submit forms. If you are a new student this year and have not already done so, please complete our Orientation modules, found on the New and Prospective Students tab, before making an appointment or coming to drop-in hours. No new students will be confirmed for an appointment until they have completed the Orientation modules. We will be offering drop-in hours ONLY for Week 1 of the quarter. Appointments will resume during Week 2. 

New transfer students should plan to meet with an advisor for long-term planning by mid-November. New first year students should plan to meet with an advisor for long-term planning by mid-February.

New this year! We'll be offering in person walk-in degree checks (primarily for graduating seniors) starting Week 4, and we will have a new system for requesting updates to degree audits (more on that later).

For quick questions, we strongly encourage you to utilize the Virtual Advising Center. As a reminder, absolutely no e-mails to the advising team will be answered; you will be redirected to the VAC. Typical response time for VAC messages is 1-3 business days. Please remember that we do not typically work evenings or weekends, so if you send a message after hours on Friday you may not receive a response until Wednesday.

Also - don't forget that the first General Body Meeting for the Public Health Undergraduate Organization is this THURSDAY, October 1st, at 7 pm!  Join us in Garren Auditorium (free food!)

Degree Audits are now available in TSS; however, we are aware of a number of global issues affecting Public Health students. 

If you took FMPH classes or had exceptions made in your degree audit prior to the TSS switchover, please be patient with us as we try to resolve the current degree audit problems with the programmers. If you took a PH 91 or 191 class over the summer or are taking the class in the Fall, please be patient, as we will automatically be bringing the classes into your degree audit during the Fall quarter.

However, if you have another degree audit issue, please use the new Degree Audit Update form to request an update to your audit (please DO NOT use the VAC; we will redirect you to the form). Please note that processing of degree audit updates will not begin until partway through the Fall quarter and may take 4-6 weeks or more.

The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science (HWSPH) is recruiting for one student worker/peer advisor to work within our existing team for the 2026-27 school year. Students should: 

Interested students should apply on Handshake. Look for job number 11480904. Keep the following in mind when you apply: 

ALL applications MUST be accompanied by a supplemental survey (found in the instructions for applying on Handshake). No students will be considered without a completed supplemental survey.

ALL applicants considered for this position must be eligible for Work-Study.

E-mails sent to the hiring manager requesting more information will be redirected to the Handshake posting. Please do not send follow-up e-mails.

The deadline for application submission is Friday, October 2nd. We anticipate holding interviews during Week 3. 

Please check over your booking report to ensure that you are properly enrolled in your correct coursework.

Students wishing to enroll in 98/99 or 198/199 classes MUST enroll themselves in these courses once the full approval has come through in TEA (there is no notification of this; please check your TEA request). This is a new change this year. Please see enrollment instructions.

As you may be aware, several Public Health majors will be unavailable for students to declare starting in Fall 2026. We previously stated on our website and in e-mail that the extended deadline to switch into these majors would be today. However, due to delays with TSS implementation, the app is not yet available that would allow you to request this change. This ALSO affects Double Major declarations, as they will need to go through the new system.

Continuing Public Health students who entered UC San Diego in or before Fall 2025 and will graduate in or after Winter 2027 will have until Friday, October 30th at 11:59 pm to change their major to one of the unavailable majors. 

Please note that we currently do not know when the app used for major selection will go online, and that we are running into our own deadline to suspend these majors. There is a possibility that the app will still not be available by October 30th, and in that case we will not be able to extend the deadline any more.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we all navigate this new system.
