Orange County Community Forum to Address Low-Barrier Housing Needs on January 25

Residents, housing providers, advocates, government officials, and the faith community are invited to a community forum to address critical low-barrier housing needs in Orange County. This Forum is addressing low-barrier housing, which is defined as housing that provides immediate and easy access with a focus on harm reduction and support. It is designed to serve individuals with significant obstacles, including behavioral health concerns, reentry from incarceration or institutional settings, and homelessness.

Apply for the Orange County Government Academy by February 20

Orange County is excited to announce the launch of the 2025 Government Academy, a comprehensive program designed to educate residents about the inner workings of Orange County government. The program begins Tuesday, March 4, and concludes with a graduation ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, at the Whitted Human Services Building in Hillsborough.
The 2025 Government Academy offers an eight-session curriculum held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sessions include in-person tours of key county facilities. Participants may miss up to three classes and still graduate. The course is open to all county residents aged 16 and older.

On Saturday, February 1, celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day, a national event that highlights the magic of libraries and all they have to offer for families!
Visit the Orange County Main Library at 137 W. Margaret Lane Hillsborough, for a special 10:30 am performance by magician Dana Hill, creative crafts, and engaging activities the whole family will enjoy. Throughout the morning, there will be book readings by special community guests.

The Board of County Commissioners will hear about a proposed development by Hands Four Development, commonly referred to as Fiddlehead, at the intersection of Morrow Mill Road and Gold Mine Loop in Chapel Hill at a meeting on Feb. 4th at 7 pm at the Whitted Human Services Center at 300 W. Tryon St., Hillsborough.

Opioid settlement funds are available for prevention, treatment, recovery, education, and awareness. The grant application period runs through February 21, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. Local organizations are encouraged to apply for funding to support innovative programs focused on prevention, treatment, recovery, and public education.
