To the Campus Community,
As we begin the fall semester with our beautiful new quad, we want to inform and remind you of the expanded outdoor spaces on our campus and how you can access them.
Our new central quad beautifies our campus and provides new gathering, recreational, and study spaces. In front of the Healey Library and McCormack Hall, “The Grove,” for instance, provides tables and seating areas for outdoor dining, group gatherings, study groups, quiet reading, and contemplation. A new outdoor basketball court has been completed near the Clark Center that is open to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, other enhanced casual, passive-use areas are open for all to enjoy and take in the beauty of the new quad. Visit umb.edu/quad to learn more about quad signature experiences, amenities, information on quad event spaces, and more about what the quad offers. Also, look forward to future guided educational tours focusing on its plantings, bioswales, and other elements to enhance the environment. A Beacons Wellness Walk Fair, which will include a tour of the quad, is scheduled for September 26, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Given that our outdoor footprint has expanded, we spent time reviewing our space use policies and procedures this summer. In doing so, we value maximum freedom of expression and the protection of all members of our communities. At UMass Boston, freedom of expression is vital to our shared goal of the pursuit of knowledge. Maximum freedom is built on an ethic of respect: respect for each other, respect for different points of view, respect—indeed admiration—for different identities, respect for our beautiful new campus quad and what we stand for: the pursuit of knowledge and its application for the common good. We must always respect the right to learn and the university operations that very right requires. To that end, we have updated the protest and demonstration section of our space use policy.
Although the summer days are growing shorter, we also encourage you to take advantage of our unique position on Dorchester Bay. This summer, the university significantly enhanced waterfront recreation opportunities, offering paddleboards, kayaks, and other forms of water entertainment to students, faculty, staff, and community members. Marine Operations also offers narrated Boston Harbor cruises.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Kirleis, Vice Chancellor Finance & Administration
