Call for Applications: 12 Affiliated Ph.D. Scholarships for studies in Portugal and CMU in the 2024/2025 academic year
Applications are open for the 4th edition of the CMU Portugal Affiliated Ph.D iniative, offering Ph.D. scholarships in selected cutting-edge areas of ICT, related to the scope of the Program. With scholarships funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), students will be fully hosted by Portuguese Universities, with the opportunity of a research period at Carnegie Mellon for up to 1 year. The admissions period will run until May 2nd, 2024.

Call for CMU Portugal Mobility Opportunities: deadline is April 8th
Applications are still open for the 2024 Mobility Initiatives “Visiting Faculty & Researchers” and “Visiting Students” aimed for research periods at Carnegie Mellon University within 2024.
The application deadline for both calls – launched under the scope of the CMU Portugal Program with the support of FCT – is April 8th, 2024.

LxMLS 2024 – The 14th Lisbon Machine Learning Summer School
The Lisbon Machine Learning Summer School (LxMLS) takes place yearly at Instituto Superior Técnico. LxMLS 2024 will be a 6-day event, scheduled to take place from July 11th to the 17th as an in-person event.

Isabel Trancoso Awarded the Medal for Scientific Achievement by the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA)
Isabel Trancoso, a CMU Portugal faculty member and Researcher at INESC-ID was distinguished as the 2024 recipient of the ISCA Association Medal for Scientific Achievement, for her “pioneering contributions to speech coding and resources for the Portuguese language, and sustained service to the speech community.”
Isabel Trancoso becomes the 30th honoree of this prestigious Medal and the first Portuguese recipient.

Carmel Majidi named the Clarence H. Adamson Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CMU
Carmel Majidi, long time CMU Portugal collaborator, was named the Clarence H. Adamson Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
Throughout the years, Majidi has served as a project PI in several impactful CMU Portugal projects collaborating closely with Mahmoud Tavakoli, Director of the “Soft and Printed Microelectronics Laboratory” (SPM) from FCTUC, Stretchtonics (ERI); WoW and Exoskins.

Remembering Jared Cohon
On March 16th, 2024, Carnegie Mellon University former President, Jared Cohon, passed away at the age of 76.
Serving as CMU President from 1997 to 2013, Cohon played a pivotal role in launching the CMU Portugal partnership. In October 2006, Cohon signed the original agreement and, during the first seven years of the Program, made frequent visits to Portugal, demonstrating his support for this international collaboration.
In honor of Jared Cohon’s memory, the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program community pays tribute to CMU President Emeritus extraordinary legacy.

Inside Story: Hirokazu Shirado two months visit to Portugal under the CMU Portugal Program
Hirokazu Shirado, Assistant Professor at Carnegie Mellon’s Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) recently conducted a visiting research period in Lisbon supported from the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program. Shirado visited the Group of AI for People and Society (GAIPS) from INESC ID led by Professor Ana Paiva, remarking that the visit had been a fantastic opportunity to expand his research agenda and academic networks through communication with researchers at Portuguese institutions.

Mahmoud Tavakoli featured in Nature’s “Where I Work”
Mahmoud Tavakoli, Director of the “Soft and Printed Microelectronics Laboratory” (SPM) from the Faculty of Science and Technology of Universidade de Coimbra (FCTUC), featured in a recent Nature article, named “How I make stretchy electronics for medicine”. Through CMU Portugal, Tavakoli’s has collaborated with the Soft Machines Lab from Carnegie Mellon University’s College of Engineering on several impactful projects and the supervision of CMU Portugal Dual Degree Ph.D. students.

Exploratory project “Signo” kickoff meeting
The Kickoff Meeting of CMU Portugal new Exploratory Research Project (ERP) Signo took place at Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS on January 10th, 2024. Funded under the 2022 CMU Portugal Call for ERPs, this year-long initiative, led by Fraunhofer with collaboration from Instituto de Filosofia (Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto) and the Software and Societal Systems Department at Carnegie Mellon, aims to integrate principles of Human-Centered Design.

MH-1, the first satellite totally developed in Portugal was launched to space
AEROS-MH-1, the first satellite built and operated from Portugal for ocean observation, was launched on March 4th, 2024, from Space-X base in California, USA. MH-1 was born from the collaboration of 12 national entities, condensed into a final product coordinated by two CMU Portugal Industry affiliates: CEiiA and Thales Edisoft Portugal.
