The Tempest

Where would I be without these guys?

Imagine the task: Quantum wants all of the wizardry of the modern theater with none of the infrastructure. There’s no electricity. It will pour.

It was 2002 and the famous Indian Ink in Allegheny Cemetery that brought Todd Brown firmly into my world and now he sees me out, designing lighting for a last, dear one for me; may there be many more for Quantum. At CMU, he teaches Lighting and Production Technology.
Every Quantum show benefits from his thoughtful students. When he can’t light a show for us, he’s still our right-hand problem solver, assessing sites and advising lighting designers who might know a little less about… electricity.
A little-known but pertinent fact about Todd is that in addition to his fancy education, he worked for Ringling Bros. Circus.
One of my favorite shows with Todd was Mnemonic in 2012, which also benefited from the artistry of Joe Pino, Sound Designer (and also a Design Professor at CMU).

Joe made an exquisite Ralph Vaughn Williams score for The End of the Affair; he gave us the perspective-bending Golden Dragon on Lake Carnegie in Highland Park; made the waves crash over ¼ mile in An Odyssey.

These guys have built a compelling, mysterious world for The Tempest, of great power and beauty… out of air, and love, and daunting scientific knowledge.
