Dear students,
I am very saddened to share the news that Thanvi Dola, an undergraduate student in Peabody College, passed away yesterday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Thanvi grew up in Delaware and joined the Vanderbilt community during the 2020–21 academic year. She was majoring in human and organizational development while completing the pre-med track with the goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. Thanvi was a wonderful student and accomplished researcher with numerous co-authored articles in scientific publications.
Thanvi loved Vanderbilt and was an engaged member of the campus community. She was editor-in-chief of The Vanderbilt Review literary journal for the 2021-22 academic year, and under her direction, the Review was a finalist for Literary Magazine of the Year. She was a two-time winner of the VINES 1000 pitch competition held through the Wond’ry. Thanvi also attended a South by Southwest Special Ideator Bootcamp in March 2023 for an immersive experience with a group of fellow student entrepreneurs. Additionally, she participated in the Vanderbilt Initiative for Public Health Equity.
Outside of school, Thanvi was an incredibly compassionate and empathetic person. She went above and beyond for everyone who crossed her path, especially her friends who she loved fiercely. She was beloved by her family and was known as the best gift giver.
“Thanvi will be remembered for her creative and artistic approach to coursework, commitment to learning, empathy, and passion to make a difference. Acutely aware of how others move through life, she emphasized the importance of connections and community,” one of Thanvi’s Vanderbilt mentors said.
Our thoughts are with Thanvi’s loved ones, and we offer our deepest condolences during this terribly difficult time. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s words, “It is not the strength of the body, but the strength of the spirit,” and Thanvi’s spirit will forever live on through those who knew her.
An informal processing session for students will be held today, Oct. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Kissam Multipurpose Room C210 with staff members from the Student Care Network and Center for Spiritual and Religious Life. If you are in need of support, please do not hesitate to take advantage of the resources listed below as well.
Sincerely,
G.L. Black
