Low Vision Awareness & Continuing Ed Series Launched |
February marks Low Vision Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the impact of vision loss and the critical role eye care professionals play in preserving independence and quality of life. In recognition of this, we are hosting a three-part Continuing Education lecture series this month, highlighting the essentials of Low Vision care and its growing importance in clinical practice.
Low vision care goes beyond visual acuity; it empowers patients to remain engaged in their daily lives, careers, and communities. Our faculty and low vision residents emphasize low vision care as a vital component of comprehensive eye health.

| We’re saddened to share the passing of James “Jim” Walters, OD ’74, PhD, on December 21, 2025. Dr. Walters earned his OD from NECO in 1974, after completing graduate training in experimental psychology at Michigan State University.
He went on to a remarkable 50-year career at the University of Houston College of Optometry, where he was widely respected for his clinical expertise in retinal disease and clinical retinal electrophysiology and—most of all—his high standards and deep generosity as a teacher and mentor.
