"There have been so many. In outpatient pediatrics I preliminarily diagnosed a teenage girl, who was complaining of undulating hearing loss in one ear, with otosclerosis by simply gathering a thorough HPI including family history and by utilizing the Weber/Rinne tuning fork tests. I felt like the expert in the room in front of the parents and pediatrician. The diagnosis was later confirmed by ENT. My takeaway is that you 100% can make a difference even in medical school, and as a student you are a second set of trained eyes on every patient."
"You finally get to USE all the knowledge that we'd studied! It's amazing, you learn about things like SIADH or sepsis or nephritic syndromes in theory, and you get to see them in person, and those little things on the Anki cards or lecture slides actually matter for treatment!"
"Find a kind resident who is willing to show you the ropes for note writing/navigating epic! You'll feel at least partially confident on taking histories/coming up with differentials, but the steps after take some practice and having someone to show you makes a massive difference."
