IUP Values Me
Student Spotlight: Malcolm Hawker
Malcolm is a sophomore psychology major and will be adding a minor in biology. Last year, he served as an executive board member for two student organizations, Students Against Racism (IUP-SAR) and NAACP-IUP. He also filled the role of NAACP historian. Malcolm is a talented presenter and has created and given educational presentations for his peers in both the IUP-SAR and the NAACP membership meetings. One IUP-SAR presentation was on the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation in modern-day media. One of his many presentations for NAACP included the history and evolution of critical race theory. Malcolm has helped with various aspects of the NAACP talent show and concert, including as a stage crew member and main photographer. He has assisted with many diversity, equity, and inclusion programming initiatives, and he led an NAACP march and protest last spring in which he gave a keynote speech. We thank you, Malcolm!
Staff Spotlight: Prashanth Bharadwaj
Prashanth is interim dean of the Eberly College of Business and has been part of the Department of Management for 29 years. He previously served as department chair and as dean’s associate for the college. In addition to his many academic achievements, publications, conference presentations, and work with the Small Business Institute at IUP, Prashanth was the 2001 recipient of IUP’s Distinguished Research Award. He has traveled to more than 60 countries, mainly for teaching, program development, and research, and he previously taught at universities in Asia and Europe. Prashanth is the architect and director of IUP’s unique MBA program in India, offered in partnership with PES University, Bangalore, since 2005. He has conducted a Discover India annual tour for international students since 2007 and coordinates IUP’s Executive MBA program in partnership with the Arab American University. Prashanth is the creator and director of IUP’s numerous offshore programs and international partnerships in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. Through his expertise and leadership, countless students have had the opportunity to grow and learn in meaningful ways that might not have been available to them otherwise. We thank you, Prashanth!
A note about IUP Values Me: Each week, we will highlight one student and one staff member to “shine a spotlight” on their leadership and involvement in campus programs and their great work assisting our campus community with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or civil rights awareness. If you have a suggestion for an IUP community member to feature in this section, please email social-equity@iup.edu.
