Update on the Linguistic Diversity Awareness (LiDA) Project |
|
|
Launched in 2022, the LiDA Project aims to explore language diversity and potential linguistic discrimination at Portland State University. Our objective is to promote awareness of multilingualism, language variations, and the issue of linguistic bias. By understanding the attitudes and biases held within the PSU community towards linguistic diversity, we aim to better support speakers of all languages and dialects. Ultimately, our goal is to educate the community about linguistic diversity and biases to foster a more inclusive environment.
Survey
We conducted a lanugage use survey among 24,351 Portland State community members, receiving nearly 10% response rate (2,216). The respondents comprised 10% faculty, 21% staff, 22% graduate students, and 42% undergraduate students.
Interviews
To date, we conducted 38 follow-up-interviews with volunteers who expressed interest after survey. These interviews explored participants' language use practices, perceptions of language use on campus, and feelings about the value placed on different language practices.
Linguistics Road Show
Over the past two academic years, we organized Linguistic Road Show events. Staffed primarily by students, the Roadshow has been set up at public campus events to engage the community in activities raising awareness about global languages, language varieties, and the mechanics of language.
Panels
We hosted one moderated panel discussion with faculty and staff, sharing their experiences with language in education and at Portland State. Another panel discussion is planned for students from diverse linguistics backgrounds to be held as a live event on campus.
LiDA is made up of faculty, staff, and students from Applied Linguistics, IELP, Speech & Hearing Sciences, and World Languages. Members of the LiDA team from the department this term are: Haille Anderson, Michelle Arendt, Janet Cowal, John Hellermann, Lynn Santelmann, Wil Waring, Aiden Weighter.
