Study Highlights Challenges and Benefits of Integrating Opioid Use Disorder and Mental Health Treatment in HIV Care |
A recent study led by Brandon A. Knettel, PhD, published in PLOS ONE, sheds light on the perspectives of healthcare providers regarding the integration of opioid use disorder (OUD) and mental health treatment within HIV care. The study revealed significant barriers and potential benefits of such integration.
“We were most surprised by the lack of consistent screening for substance use challenges in HIV care, and by the lack of referral pathways between HIV care and substance use treatment,” Knettel explained.

Nursing Faculty Launch Pilot Projects for Cancer Survivors and People Living with HIV
|
Dr. Marissa Abram and Dr. Sophia Smith
|
The School of Nursing’s Center for Nursing Research (CNR) has awarded two faculty members with Fall 2024 pilot grants: Assistant Professor Marissa Abram and Associate Professor with Tenure Sophia Smith.
The purpose of this year’s grants was to enable researchers to acquire preliminary data for a new submission or resubmission of a federal proposal (R21, R34, RO1, UO1). The call for proposals prioritized health equity and social determinants of health, seeking projects and nurse-led interventions or models of care related to climate change and health, community engaged research in rural settings, or other areas.

This fall, the fourth cohort of the School of Nursing's Mobile Prevention and Care Team (M-PACT) scholars completed their immersion experience during Fall Break. M-PACT is a HRSA-funded collaborative program between the School of Nursing and Durham Technical Community College. During the immersion, the students worked with the Pamlico County Health Department, county schools, and community organizations. Among the many clinical experiences during the week, the students screened 132 children for hearing and 114 for vision. Of those screened for vision, over 36 children needed an additional vision exam and were fitted for glasses by the Durham Tech Mobile Health Unit.
