Welcome from G.L. Black, Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Dear Vanderbilt families,

Congratulations on joining our Vanderbilt community! We are excited to welcome you and your student. In my role as vice provost for student affairs and dean of students, I am privileged to take a central role in your student’s learning, development and experience as an undergraduate. My office creates opportunities to involve students in diverse learning communities and provides a critical structure for enriching the overall student experience.

To help students navigate the expansive opportunities and inevitable stressors of their first year at Vanderbilt, seeks to cultivate vibrant, inclusive communities that foster a student’s sense of belonging and wellbeing.

Once your student has settled in and is getting into their academic routine, they will have the opportunity to attend the Student Involvement Fair and the Service Fair where they can learn about the over 475 student organizations we have on campus. The Student Affairs team members who support these organizations will help them find meaningful experiences and develop the leadership skills to make a difference in their communities.

And inevitably, your student will need additional support while navigating life at Vanderbilt at one time or another, and the Student Affairs team will be here to support them then as well. Our Student Care Network provides a holistic network of health and wellness resources bolstered by four primary offices, including Student Care Coordination, the University Counseling Center, the Student Health Center and the Center for Student Wellbeing.

Vanderbilt’s health and wellness infrastructure is intended to provide the care, guidance and support for your student to grow and thrive at Vanderbilt and beyond. Please read the rest of this newsletter for more information on all aspects—physical, mental and emotional—of student well-being at Vanderbilt.

Again, we could not be more thrilled to welcome your student to campus in August.

Sincerely,
G.L. Black
Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Student Care Network

The Student Care Network is a holistic network of services and resources pertaining to health and wellness available to all Vanderbilt University students who have paid the Student Health Fee. Resources are available for categories such as emotional, financial, physical and social wellness.

Student Care Coordination is the first stop for students wanting to utilize these services. After filling out the Student Care Coordination Intake Form, students will meet with a care coordinator who can help connect them with the best resources for their needs.

Health care provider resources

For most medical situations, it is best to begin with a visit to the Student Health Center (for students) or a primary care physician. During evenings and weekends, urgent care centers are an option if you cannot wait for treatment. The Student Health Center has compiled a list of health care providers in Nashville that are available for students, scholars and families. The list can be found here

Student Health Insurance Plan

All degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students (excluding the Division of Unclassified Studies and consortium students) enrolled in 4+ credit hours, a 0-credit research/dissertation course, or any other course that is considered to equate to full-time enrollment are automatically enrolled in—and will be billed for—the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), which is administered by Vanderbilt’s plan administrator, Academic Health Plans (AHP).

Students with comparable health insurance coverage may request to waive the SHIP by completing the waiver form found here. The waiver form will become available on June 15, 2023. The deadline to submit the waiver form is Aug. 1, 2023.

Care Planning

It is important that your student arrive on campus with an understanding of their specific health care needs, including any allergies and associated reactions, and medications, including doses. If they are taking medicine, it is important to ensure that they bring an adequate supply and/or refills that they can access while on campus. If they are currently seeing a health care professional for medical and/or mental health concerns, they should consider discussing a plan for ongoing care, which may include short-term services on campus and/or long-term care off campus.

Your student can contact Student Care Coordination before arriving to campus to discuss existing health care needs and for assistance in developing a plan for ongoing care.
