Boston. When a recent assignment took me to Boston, a city I’d visited only once briefly, I talked my folks into flying up from Florida to meet me. The trip coincided with my dad’s birthday and the leadup to a major national milestone: the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. The cherry on top was a surprise visit from my brother, a pilot, who had a stopover in Boston. Here’s what tickled our fancies as a family:
|
-
A historic tea party: Iced tea is serious business for Southerners. But the story behind the loose leaf variety—or more precisely, the forty-six tons of it that were dumped into Boston Harbor on December 16, 1773—is sure to impress all visitors at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum. The museum brings history to captivating life with reenactments and full-scale replicas of eighteenth-century ships. Bursting with patriotism afterward, we popped across the river to the Barking Crab for some scrumptious clam chowder.
-
Sweet treats: Bostonians are as fiercely divided over who serves the best baked goods in town—Mike’s Pastry or Modern Pastry, both in the historic North End—as SEC rivals are about their beloved teams. The twenty-minute line at Mike’s was well worth it for a chocolate-chip cannoli, red velvet cupcake, and slice of carrot cake all so irresistible we shamelessly dug in right there on the sidewalk.
- Art deco digs: The Dagny, an elegant hotel that recently opened in the Financial District, had one of the comfiest beds I’ve ever tucked into. Another bonus, especially for my college-football-loving fam: massive in-room TVs perfect for game-watching during downtime.
