Larner Medical Students Address Health Disparities Through Schweitzer Fellowships |
Ten Class of 2028 medical students are participating in the 2025–26 Schweitzer Fellowship Program, carrying out sustainable, evidence-based projects that address health disparities in the local community. Projects include bringing arts and crafts to hospitalized children, establishing a wound care program for unhoused people, and mental health mentorship for refugee youth.

| Teens Explore Biomedical Research |
Students from rural New England high schools attended the Larner College of Medicine’s Stem Cells, Cell Therapies, and Bioengineering in Lung Biology and Diseases conference at no charge on July 7. They learned advanced scientific techniques alongside local, national, and international researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows and explored biomedical research career pathways.

| Behind the Lens: Imaging at CPIC
|
Meet Todd Clason, M.Sc., research assistant professor of pharmacology and director of the Customized Physiology and Imaging Core (CPIC) of the Vermont Center for Cardiovascular and Brain Health at the Larner College of Medicine. The CPIC provides high-level pre- and post-experiment research imaging and electrophysiology instrumentation to researchers who use the devices to evaluate living systems.

A new study launched by Melanie Bui, M.D., Ph.D. (pictured at left, left), associate professor of medicine, and Steven Roberts, Ph.D. (pictured at left, right), associate professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, seeks insights into why Vermont has one of the highest rates of melanoma in the country. The research is funded by a pilot award of $20,000 through the UVM Cancer Center’s Population Sciences and Cancer Outcomes program.

|
Marissa Birne, M.Ed., associate director of education at the UVM Center on Aging, has been selected for a 2025–26 Eisner Prize Fellowship, a year-long program designed to support leaders who are pioneering innovations in intergenerational connection. Selected from a highly competitive applicant pool, fellows receive $50,000 to support their project proposal.

|
Deena Snoke, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the Toth Lab and a UVM Cancer Center member, was one of eight postdoctoral fellows—and the first from UVM—invited to the Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer training hosted by Yale in June. Additionally, Snoke was recently awarded the Cancer Center’s Postdoctoral Research Excellence Award, which grants $10,000 per year for three years for research and training activities.

For Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the June 12 episode of the University of Vermont’s Across the Fence program features UVM Cancer Center members Steven Ades, M.D., professor of medicine (pictured at left, left), and Nataniel Lester-Coll, M.D. (pictured at left, right), associate professor and division chief of radiation oncology, discussing prostate cancer risk factors, symptoms, and treatments.

On June 13 eight medical students from the Larner Class of 2028 volunteered at the Intervale Conservation Nursery for their end-of-year Community Service Day project. Following an introduction on how to distinguish between weeds and valuable growth led by Intervale Center Production Manager Ben Fishbein, the volunteers cleared out two full beds of weeds in two hours.
