With our academic year coming to an end, and the Class of 2023 now graduated, I want to take a moment to reflect on the weekend and the year that has passed. I also want to thank and congratulate all of you – faculty, students, and staff – for your efforts and accomplishments.

Students, family, friends, faculty, and staff gathered May 20 and 21 to celebrate both the next generation of biomedical scientists and health professionals, as well as the exceptional academic achievements of several Larner College of Medicine faculty, during the University of Vermont’s Commencement Weekend.

The University of Vermont recently announced the recipients of the 2023 Faculty Awards, and four Larner College of Medicine faculty were among the honorees.

During the fourth annual Professionalism Week celebration, members of the Larner College of Medicine community had an opportunity to both celebrate role models, and renew their own commitment to the tenets of professionalism.

The medical Class of 2023’s Honors Night on May 15 featured recognition for students, faculty, and staff, including the AOA Honor Medical Society faculty and housestaff awards; the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine faculty and student awards; Area Health Education Center Scholars; department awards to students; and awards from the Class of 2023.

Class of 2026 medical students Aina Rattu, Shrey Patel, and Shani Legore have been selected to lead the 2023 “Look at Larner” event in September 2023. Look at Larner is an admissions outreach program designed for students from backgrounds typically underrepresented in medicine who have a strong interest in pursuing a medical degree.

Daniel Weiss, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, was honored as an outstanding Mount Sinai-trained physician scientist with the Terry Ann Krulwich Physician-Scientist Alumni Award at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai 2023 Alumni Reunion Awards Ceremony Dinner on May 10 in New York City.

Dana Allison ’24 presented her research on “A Survey of Virtual Reality Interventions for Autistic Spectrum Disorder Therapy: A Neuroscience Perspective” at the American Academy of Neurology 75th Annual Meeting in April. Allison’s findings highlight the significant potential of VR technology as an intervention for social-communication deficits associated with autism.
