Happy November, Spartan families! With daylight saving time coming to an end here in East Lansing, the days have certainly seemed shorter after turning our clocks back an hour last weekend. With a little over a month left of classes, longer nights and chillier weather can give your Spartan a good reason to get cozy and finish the semester strong!
Also, just a reminder that the university will be closed Nov. 23 and 24. Residence halls and dining halls will remain open (with modified hours). For students staying on campus during that time, encourage them to attend the 21st Annual Homiesgiving Unity Dinner Nov. 23 at noon in Brody Classrooms. This dinner is presented by the Office of Cultural and Academic Transitions.
We hope those days offer some rest and relaxation for you and your student!
Take good care,
Laurin

RA and ICA Recruitment
Nov. 1 marked the beginning of resident assistant (RA) and intercultural aide (ICA) recruitment for the 2024-25 academic year at MSU. Residence Education and MRULE teams are working hard to recruit and interview interested students for next year's positions! 2024-25 On-Campus Housing Request Form
Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS) is now accepting housing requests for the spring 2024 semester from students who are not currently residing on campus. This opportunity is open to transfer students and others who are looking to return to campus. Housing options may include on-campus apartments, single rooms and double rooms. We encourage interested students to complete the request form in their My Housing account at liveon.msu.edu by Dec. 4.
Please be aware that while we will make every effort to accommodate these requests, housing availability is contingent on available space and is not guaranteed upon submission. We are dedicated to fulfilling as many requests as possible.

Residence Hall Winter Break Information
As the winter break approaches, we want to ensure a smooth transition for our residents. Students not staying on campus during the break must leave the residence halls by 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 15. Please note, your student does not have to move everything out of their room for winter break; their belongings can remain in their rooms for their return in January. Students should take anything they may need over a break, as hall access will be limited.
For those students who require late stay or early arrival, they can now request a late stay or early arrival in their My Housing account.
Winter break housing, covering Dec. 16 to Jan. 5, is available for a flat fee of $315, which includes 34 meal accesses to open dining halls. Students can apply for winter break housing now in their My Housing account. Please be aware that dining hours will be adjusted during the break and residence halls will not be fully staffed for the break period.

Updates from University Health and Wellbeing
Wellness Wednesdays
MSU Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS), part of University Health and Wellbeing (UHW), hosts Wellness Wednesdays, a support group designed for students new to the university, having difficulty adjusting to campus life, looking for peers interested in improving their overall well-being and discussing mental health topics, and new students looking to gain concrete skills for managing some of the challenges we face in daily life in relation to our general outlook on life. More info is available here.
Taking a Health-centered Approach to Eating and Nutrition
College students are more at risk and vulnerable to diet culture messages and health misinformation, which can lead to dangerous diet trends and disordered eating. According to UHW’s Campus Health Services, health messages that promote a fear of weight gain for college students can perpetuate negative attitudes toward weight that can interfere with positive eating and physical activity behaviors in the college student population.
Here are our three key messages to share with your Spartan:
1. Supporting yourself with food: Having a plan to feed yourself regularly throughout the day will allow you to stay focused and energized.
2. Eating for well-being: That means choosing to eat a variety of foods, including those that you enjoy most.
3. Trusting your body: Eating regularly and exploring opportunities to be physically active throughout the day will allow your body to settle at a weight that is most natural for you.
Students with eating or weight concerns can make an individual nutrition appointment with a dietitian at Campus Health Services. Additionally, the MSU Student Food Bank, which is run by students, serves MSU students experiencing food insecurity by providing free food and related items.
For more information on the University Health and Wellbeing Eating Disorder team, please read this State News article.
Flu Season is Here
Flu season is here and now is a good time to schedule a flu vaccine. Remind your Spartan that flu vaccinations are available through Campus Health Services at Olin Health Center and the new Olin Outpost in Brody Hall. Most insurance plans cover the flu shot annually; uninsured students can pay at the time of the appointment to receive a flu shot at a reduced cost. Your Spartans can schedule their appointments here.
Worried about your Spartan?
University Health and Wellbeing’s Health Promotion and Engagement offers mindfulness practices from Mindful STATE. If you are caught up in worry about someone you care about and you are feeling stressed, take some time to join us for this brief loving-kindness meditation, and help yourself regain your balance. Click here to access the meditation. We encourage you to share this practice with your Spartan.

Spring Semester Billing
Spring semester bills will be available online Dec. 16, and are due Jan. 8, 2024. Be sure your student’s fall semester charges are paid in full by Dec. 1 so your student remains in good financial standing and will not have any holds that may prevent enrollment or schedule changes.
The IRS Form 1098-T for calendar year 2023 will be available in SIS by Jan. 31, 2024. This form will assist with the education tax credit when filing your federal income tax if your income qualifies.

Mental Health Reminder from DPPS
As the holiday season approaches, the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) would like to remind families to encourage their students to take care of their mental health. The department’s Community Care Unit (CCU) responds to incidents that involve a behavioral health concern or crisis with a primary goal of providing safety and support. CCU detectives provide customized care based on individual needs and respond using trauma-informed and inclusive practices. The department also has a police social worker available. You can learn more here.
