June 2025 Newsletter

Summer in East Lansing, while perhaps a bit slower paced, is anything but slow. Campus is bustling with summer camps and conferences, residence halls and dining areas are undergoing maintenance and renovations, and preparations are well underway for the return of students in about 10 short weeks! In the meantime, we’re enjoying MSU Dairy Store, Albert EL Fresco, Summer Circle Theatre, and looking forward to The Meulder Summer Carillon Series. As we look ahead, we’ll be sure to use the 2025-26 Spartan Family Calendar and our beloved campus squirrels to track our plans — be sure to grab yours either online now or in the Spartan Spirit Shop in July/August!

If you are new to this community, welcome! We are so excited to have you as a part of the Spartan family! To celebrate, look at this fun, unique, not-sold-in-stores merchandise that is fun for you, for a high school grad headed to MSU, or even a recent MSU grad. These boxes are a fundraiser for Spartan Family Connections (our office) to put on programs and events just for you: the families and supporters of MSU students! Watch the July newsletter for information about one of those events: a move-in happy hour to celebrate (or commiserate) with other families after a long day of moving your Spartan in!

In the meantime, enjoy your summer and take care.

Family Weekend 2025
Family Weekend will be celebrated shortly after move-in, Sept. 12-14. We realize this is very early in the fall calendar and earlier than we would have chosen. We work with MSU Athletics to host Family Weekend during a home football game weekend, and the schedule offered fewer "better weather" options than previous years. We understand if returning to campus so quickly after move-in doesn’t work for your family, and we welcome you to campus whenever it does! Find more information here about Family Weekend, including registration information, support request survey, lodging link and information about exciting changes to this year’s event.

Exciting Culinary Updates for Fall at MSU

Save with Spartan Cash
Starting this fall, students will enjoy a 15% discount when they use Spartan Cash at any Culinary Services-operated location! Spartan Cash is a safe, convenient alternative to carrying credit cards — funds are loaded directly onto the student’s MSU ID. Plus, it’s easy for families to support their Spartan by adding funds online anytime — perfect for birthdays, exam weeks or just because.

A Fresh Look for Sparty’s
This summer, Sparty’s Market, mini-markets, and micro-markets are getting a brand refresh with a new logo and updated color palette. The design reflects modern trends while maintaining the welcoming spirit of the Sparty’s experience. Be sure to stop by and check out the updated look!

Dining Enhancements at Holden and Holmes
We’re elevating convenience and variety at Holden and Holmes:

  • The Grab & Go locations at both halls are transforming into Sparty’s Markets, offering chef-prepared grab-and-go meals alongside an expanded selection of grocery-sized products.
  • Sparty’s Market at Holden will introduce more retail options and a new açaí bowl station, perfect for a fresh, nutritious boost between classes.
  • Additionally, the Sparty’s mini-market at Holden will be reimagined as a bagel sandwich and dirty soda concept. Students can order from a curated in-person menu or customize their selections through mobile ordering. This exciting new venue brings a fun and innovative flavor to campus life!
  • The Sparty’s Market at Holmes will include a refreshed store layout for easier shopping and food lockers for mobile order pickup, streamlining the grab-and-go experience for busy Spartans.

Culinary Services is proud to bring these innovative updates to campus, supporting student success with convenience, quality and variety. We can’t wait for your Spartan to experience what’s new this fall!

Incoming Student Housing Assignments
Housing and roommate preferences for incoming students are due Friday, June 13. It is essential for students to complete all necessary forms and read their emails regularly to stay informed about the process. Housing assignments will be sent out in mid-July, providing students with time to prepare for their new living arrangements.

An overview of the housing preference process can be found on the Live On website.

2025 On-Campus Move-In Dates

International students will move in Aug. 16 and 17, followed by the International Student Welcome event from Aug. 18-20. Incoming students will move in Aug. 19 and 20, with required New Student Orientation and Fall Welcome activities beginning the evening of Aug. 20. Returning students are scheduled to move in Aug. 20 and 21.

In mid-to-late July, students living on campus will be prompted to select their specific move-in date and time.

MSU will also have the Fall 2025 Welcome Team. By volunteering for the Welcome Team, residents not only get the chance to move in early but also have the opportunity to meet new people and make meaningful connections. More information will be shared in July!

Mental Health Resources Available through CAPS and ThrivingCampus

Does your Spartan need some support? Students can connect with Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS) for short-term help, and they can also find providers of long-term therapy on ThrivingCampus, which makes it easy to connect with off-campus mental health care and well-being services. With ThrivingCampus, you can help your student browse and filter providers based on their needs and preferences, get answers to common questions, reach out to community providers and connect with mental health care and other services to support their well-being.

CRC Community Connection Events This Summer

Do you know a Spartan in recovery who could use allyship and community? Collegiate Recovery Community has three upcoming connection events this Summer! On Thursday, June 5 CRC Community Connection will take place at Summer Circle Theatre in the courtyard between the MSU Auditorium and the Kresge Art Building. Students can meet in the CRC Lounge at 6 p.m. to walk together after the CRC All Recovery Meeting. On Friday, July 11 CRC Community Connection will take place at the EL Summer Concert at 6 p.m. To join, students can meet in CRC Lounge at 5:30 p.m. and walk together with the group. Finally, on Thursday, Aug. 7, CRC Community Connection will take place at Moonlight Film Festival at Valley Court Park at dusk. Students can meet in the CRC Lounge at 7 p.m. to carpool after the CRC All Recovery Meeting.

Recovery Meetings and Housing

Do you know someone who could use some support? Students can join weekly CRC All Recovery Support Meetings Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the CRC Student Lounge (Room 27, Student Services Building basement) or join virtually. Recovery housing is still available! For students who are in recovery from a substance use disorder, this on-campus housing option offers a safe and supportive living environment where they can have a real college experience without the use of alcohol or drugs. Those interested in living in on-campus Recovery Housing can fill out the application and they will be contacted for an interview.

Summer Class Dates

This is a reminder that students should review important section dates if enrolled or deciding to enroll in summer 2025 classes. Dates such as the last day to drop with a refund may vary from class to class, so be sure they check all classes.

To find section dates:
Log in to student.msu.edu, or search for the class in Class Search.
Click on the class.
Scroll down to “Section Dates.”

The process of dropping a class can be done through student.msu.edu if needed. If your student has questions, they should contact the Spartan One-Stop at onestop@msu.edu.

Office of Financial Aid Reminders

If students are planning to use a Parent PLUS Loan for summer semester 2025, this is a separate application at studentaid.gov. Be sure students choose the 2024-25 aid year, and the date range “06/25-07/25.” Parent PLUS applications are also now available for the 2025-26 school year.

Now is the time to check the student financial aid portal for any actions required to finalize the 2025-26 financial aid package. The “Documents” or “Notifications” tab may have a notice of outstanding step(s) necessary to allow aid to disburse.

If students have not already done so, the 2025-26 FAFSA is available to complete at fafsa.gov. It is always recommended they complete this simple application to be considered for a number of federal, state and MSU scholarship opportunities.

MSU ID Office: Welcome New Students

It’s time for your new Spartan to upload a photo for their Spartan Card, the university issued identification card! This must be done before they move in. Don’t wait to do this important task! The Spartan Card is essential for getting around campus. Visit idoffice.msu.edu to learn more about how the Spartan Card is used for door access, Spartan Cash, the library and more.

Did you know?

  • New students are required to upload a photo for a Spartan Card, which will allow them to have their new card ready for pick up when they come to campus.
  • They can pick up their Spartan Card now if visiting campus.
  • Before uploading their photo, students can change their name on the front of the Spartan Card from their legal name to a chosen name by logging in to student.msu.edu, click the My Profile tile then click the Personal details link. For questions or assistance in this process, email onestop@msu.edu or call 517-432-8000.

Details on how to upload a photo and pick up a Spartan Card can be found here: MSU ID Office New Students.
