Celebrating Miami: Tribe and University Week

Celebrating Miami Tribe and University Event Flyer

The annual “Celebrating Miami: Tribe and University” week of events starts today!
The Myaamia Center, in partnership with the Miami University athletics department, celebrates the relationship between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University.
Tribal leadership will travel to Oxford, and we will honor both the overall relationship and the Myaamia Center's 25th anniversary with in-game events, special shout-outs, and festivities throughout the week.

October of 1846 saw one of the most important events in the history of the Miami people: the forced removal of over 300 Myaamiaki ‘Myaamia people’ to a new reservation in Kansas. Readers can follow a detailed set of posts, including day-by-day accounts, by Diane Hunter on Aacimohtaatiiyankwi.

On Monday, October 12, staff from the Myaamia Center and Miami Tribe’s Cultural Resource Office traveled to the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. The day began with a wonderful talk that included the Myaamia artists and cultural practitioners Dani Tippmann and Katrina Mitten. After lunch, the group moved outside for Stomp and Social Dances that included our friends and relatives from the Shawnee Tribe. It was a beautiful fall day, and many non-Native guests of the museum joined in the dances. There was laughter and smiles everywhere that day. Mihši neewe ‘big thanks’ to Monica Raphael of the Eiteljorg for organizing the gathering and to the entire staff of the museum for all their hard work in making the day a success.

Outreach Office Updates

The Myaamia Center recently hosted Open Houses for Homecoming weekend on Saturday, September 26, and Family Weekend on Saturday, October 17. These events provide an opportunity for Miami University students, alumni, and their families to learn more about the work of the Center and the relationship between the Miami Tribe and Miami University. Over 50 visitors visited the center over those two days, including 24 from Dr. John Schaefer’s Anthropology 185 Cultural Diversity in the United States class.
If your class or organization is interested in visiting the Myaamia Center or learning more about our work, please contact Andrew Sawyer, Education Outreach Specialist: sawyerah@miamioh.edu.

As Halloween approaches, Myaamia students are finishing midterms and getting ready for Celebrating Miami Week. They’ll have a chance to participate in T-shirt tosses, Zamboni rides, and other activities during the week's athletic events. This past weekend, the Myaamia Center held a lacrosse stick-making workshop for the students. Our supply of wooden sticks was running low in Oxford, so they helped make more and took home a stick of their own. On Sunday, the students got to try out their new sticks in our last lacrosse game of the season. With the weather getting cooler, we won’t be able to play lacrosse until the springtime, but we are looking forward to starting some of our favorite winter activities, like storytelling.
