Be Prepared: More Extremely Cold Weather In the Forecast
|
The National Weather Service forecasts another round of bitterly cold temperatures beginning Thursday night through Saturday morning.
|
TIPS FOR STAYING WARM SAFELY
|
As temperatures drop, keep these safety tips in mind:
|
- Stay indoors as much as possible
- Dress in layers and wear a hat, gloves and a scarf when going outside
- Keep your home warm. If you use a space heater, keep it at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never leave it on unattended.
- Do not use ovens, grills or generators indoors to heat your home. They can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Check on neighbors, especially older adults or anyone who may need help during the cold
|
PREVENT FROZEN WATER PIPES
|
Take the following precautions to prevent your pipes from freezing:
|
-
Allow a continuous trickle of water to flow through faucet(s)
- Seal any leaks around doors or windows to reduce drafts
- Open cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathrooms to allow the heat from the house to circulate
- Wrap interior piping running along outside walls with pipe insulation or heat tape
|
One sign that your interior piping may be frozen: If you observe a reduced trickle of water from your faucet, don’t attempt to thaw a frozen pipe yourself using an open flame. Contact a qualified plumbing contractor to do the work.

Flu Facts: What to Know About Antiviral Treatments
|
Flu season is here—and so is misinformation about treatments like Tamiflu. While antivirals aren’t cure-alls, prescription medications such as Tamiflu and Xofluza can shorten illness, reduce symptoms and lower the risk of complications, especially for people at higher risk of severe flu.
Antivirals work best when started within 48 hours of symptoms and are recommended for older adults, young children, pregnant people, and individuals with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems. Side effects are usually mild, and serious reactions are rare. Claims about severe behavioral effects have been studied and are more often linked to the flu itself, not the medication.
Bottom line: Get tested early if symptoms hit hard, talk to a licensed medical provider promptly if you’re high-risk, and remember antivirals are a backup—not a substitute—for vaccination. Learn more about antiviral flu treatments.
|
Skokie Health and Human Services is offering free flu shots every Wednesday in January, from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at Village Hall (5127 Oakton St., lower level). No appointment needed. COVID-19 and RSV vaccines are also available for eligible residents.

Prevent Motor Vehicle Burglaries
|
The Skokie Police Department reminds residents to stay alert and take proactive steps to help prevent vehicle burglaries:
|
-
Always lock your vehicle, even if it’s parked in your driveway, garage or in front of your home.
- Remove or hide valuables, including purses, keys, wallets, electronics, shopping bags, change, garage door openers or anything that may attract attention.
- Never leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle.
-
Park in well-lit, visible areas. Motion-sensor lighting and security cameras can act as a deterrent.
- Close all windows, sunroofs and convertible tops.
- Stay alert to your surroundings and immediately report any suspicious activity.
-
Call 911 if you observe someone unlawfully entering your vehicle. Do not approach or confront them.
- File a police report if you are a victim of a vehicle burglary to help Skokie Police track crime patterns and apprehend those responsible.
