GCPL newsletter October '24

The Garfield Center for Public Leadership is in the thick of its programming for the fall semester, with our crisis simulation and fall seminar taking place this month. We are continuing to develop many new initiatives both within Hiram and outside organizations, as well as diving into various topics in the GCPL course with our new group of scholars.

Fall Seminar
We would like to remind you that our fall seminar is taking place this month, October 29, from 5-7 p.m. on campus in the Kennedy Center Ballroom. The title of this event is “America’s Immigration Situation: 2024”, with guest speakers Katie Tobin and Andrew “Art” Arthur. Our guests will analyze the facts of the current immigration situation in the United States, and consider what the best policies would be for the U.S. government to adopt moving forward. Please find more information on our speakers and the registration form here.

Introducing our GCPL Scholars
One of the many recent GCPL efforts has been to expand our outreach by using social media, as well as a re-design of our website. We would like to share with you the updated current scholars in GCPL this 24-25 academic year:
Current Scholars – Hiram College

Thus far, we seem to have a very actively engaged group who are enthused about the topics included in our curriculum this year.

Working with Crestwood High School
Our partnership with Crestwood High School is continuing to evolve in a very productive fashion. We have been working very closely with Crestwood in order to directly involve their social studies students in GCPL programming. As a first example of this involvement, 12 of their students will be attending the GCPL’s upcoming seminar on immigration, as well as attending the dinner after the seminar.

We have also paired 16 Crestwood students with GCPL students, with the latter acting as mentors to the high school students. The first step in this process – with each of the GCPL scholars sending their mentees an introductory email – has now occurred, and we’ll be using the coming months as a test case to see how this initiative can be put to best use.

Developing the Civility Agenda
GCPL personnel continue working on developing our programming with regard to civility training. The GCPL-sponsored, 1-credit, undergraduate course on civility – titled “Can’t We All Just Get Along?” – is now listed on the class schedules for next semester. We are happy to have former GCPL scholar and CLI cohort member, Becca Dyer, be the instructor for this course.

Working with the First-Year program
GCPL personnel have recently met with representatives of Hiram’s Burton D.  Morgan Entrepreneurship Center, the Environmental Studies program, and Hiram’s First-Year program, in order to explore the possibility of focusing next year’s First-Year ethics theme on the intersection of sustainability and entrepreneurship. This initiative has grown out of conversations between GCPL personnel and a Hiram alum who works in the field of financing sustainable energy projects, and they are very interested in having Hiram serve as a venue for education on these themes.
