Systematic reviews synthesize research in a specified area to provide evidence-based guidance to practitioners in a variety of settings. Librarians are essential to review projects in a consultant role or as a member of a research team, and the members of the systematic review team provide methodological expertise and tools, and expert knowledge to create comprehensive literature searches that reduce bias, increase significance of findings, and work more efficiently.
Michael Peper, Head of the Center for Faculty & Staff Initiatives and Engagement, said that researchers often enter a consultation overwhelmed by the systematic review process but that after collaborating with librarians to understand best practices and resources, they are more confident and relaxed in their approach to the project.
“This was my first time conducting a systematic review. Working with the team from the libraries allowed me to learn about the systematic steps involved in performing a literature review and, more importantly, how to manage the data using Covidence. Michael and his team were such a delight to work with. He was helpful, patient, and flexible, assisting the team in navigating and managing the project. I would recommend the library’s systematic review services, you get to work with great folks.”
