THIS WEEK AT CHRIST CHURCH, GEORGETOWN
Wednesday, March 12, 2025

SPECIAL NOTICES
A Message from the Rector: We are sad to say that Mother Karin Ekholm is leaving Christ Church as she wishes to pursue a number of opportunities elsewhere. We are most grateful for her wisdom and work with the Women’s Bible Study, our Youth Ministry, our Daily Offices and for her preaching and pastoral work, particularly with our elderly and housebound. She has grown as a priest in her time here, and we wish her well in her ministry going forward.
Tuesday Evenings in Lent: This Lent, we invite you to join us for five evenings of fellowship and formation: March 11, 18, and 25, and April 1 and 8. Following a simple supper at 6:30 p.m. in Keith Hall, attendees will participate in one of three distinct opportunities for learning:
Questions from the World to the Church: Join us for a series of lectures and table discussions facilitated by eminent cultural theologians as we seek authentic responses to the world’s questions. Organized by Deacon Tiffany Clark in conjunction with a group of young professionals in the parish, the series will assist participants in bridging the gap between the Christian faith and the perspectives of family members, friends, neighbors, and colleagues, equipping them to speak openly, winsomely, and faithfully of Christ and his Church when organic opportunities arise. For more information and to register, click here.
March 11: What holds the church community together and what does it look like to belong to the church in a healthy way? - The Reverend Dr. E. Ross Kane, Associate Professor of Theology, Ethics, and Culture, and Director of Doctoral Programs at Virginia Theological Seminary
March 18: What is the basis of Christian faith and how can that credibly work in a pluralist world? - The Reverend Dr. E. Ross Kane
March 25: How does Christianity offer ethical guidance to key cultural issues while navigating the inherent risk of fundamentalism or exclusion?- Dr. Karen Swallow Prior
April 1: Given the state of the world, how can we consider the possibility of God? - The Very Reverend Dr. Ian S. Markham, Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and President of General Theological Seminary
April 8: How does prayer work? How can someone believe in God when their prayers go unanswered? - The Very Reverend Dr. Ian S. Markham
A Path towards Membership: Led by Father Nate Huddleston, this course is intended for those who are new to Christ Church and who would like to deepen their connection with and commitment to the parish community. For more information and to register, click here.
Adult Confirmation Class: Are you ready to take the next step in your spiritual journey? The Adult Confirmation Class is the official pathway to Confirmation in the Episcopal Church—a sacred opportunity to affirm your faith and commitment. (NOTE: If you come from the Roman Catholic tradition, this is the way to be formally received into the Episcopal Church.) Whether you are seeking to be confirmed or received, or simply want to deepen your understanding of the Anglican/Episcopal tradition, this class, led by the Rector, is for you. For more information or to register, click here.
At the conclusion of the evening, all will gather in the nave to recite the brief office of Compline. Professional nursery care for children four months of age and older, as well as developmentally appropriate, Lenten-themed art activities, will be available in the Chapel of Saint Jude. Questions? Contact the Parish Office.
Lenten Retreat: Join us for Christ Church’s second annual Lenten Retreat, which will take place on Friday, March 21 (evening), Saturday, March 22, and Sunday, March 23 (midday), at Washington National Cathedral’s beautifully renovated Virginia Mae Center (formerly the College of Preachers). The retreat will be led by former parishioner Brother Lain Wilson of the Society of Saint John the Evangelist. Those who opt for a fully immersive experience will spend the weekend at the former College of Preachers, attending fireside talks in the Refectory, taking contemplative walks in the gardens, praying the Daily Office in the Chapel, and soaking in the transcendent atmosphere of this unique venue. Registration is also available for those who are only able attend daytime sessions on Saturday, March 22. The registration fee for a fully immersive experience (with accommodation and meals) begins at $350. The registration fee for Saturday alone (with breakfast and lunch) is $100. For more, contact Deacon Tiffany Clark. Register here by Sunday, February 23.
GENERAL NOTICES
A Call to Teach Sunday School: As the number of children attending our Sunday School continues to grow and as we prepare to move into the renovated Parish Hall, we are seeking additional adult teachers and volunteers to assist with our Sunday School program. In the words of parishioner and experienced Sunday School Teacher, Molly Peacock, “Teaching Sunday School is easier and harder than you think. One thing is sure: it is full of meaning, and opportunity to engage with our Lord and Savior right now. You’ll leave the mark of Grace on our future.” Amen, Mrs. Peacock.  Feeling called to learn more? Please contact Youth and Family Minister Chrissy Casey.
Faith 2.0: Join this vibrant group of young professionals as they seek to deepen faith and fellowship by walking together through the current chapter of their spiritual journeys. Gatherings are held on Sundays, 10:00 a.m., at L.A. Burdick Chocolate Shop and Café: 1319 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. For more information, contact parishioner Adriane Connerton.
Bite-sized Bible Study: Join fellow parents of nursery and Sunday School-aged children for a team-led, 30-minute exploration of the Psalms. The group gathers on Sundays, at 10:15 a.m., on the second floor of the Church building. Nursery care for infants and toddlers, as well as supervised, age-appropriate activities for older children, is provided in the Chapel of Saint Jude. For more information, contact parishioners Julia Ainsley, Megan Murton, or Matthew Fredericks.
Thursday Morning Bible Study: Parishioners of all ages and stages of life are invited to this fortnightly study of selected psalms, co-led by parishioners Ernest Clark, David Straut, and Virginia Mentz. Preparation for discussions is beneficial but not essential. Sessions will take place on Thursdays, March 13 and 27, April 10 and 24, May 8 and 22, and June 5, at 8:00 a.m., in Keith Hall.
Young Professionals Happy Hour: The next Young Professionals Happy Hour will take place on Thursday, March 13, at Le Bar à Vin (at Chez Billy Sud): 1039 31st Street, NW. All parishioners in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, along with family members, friends, and colleagues, are invited to attend. For more information, contact Father Nate Huddleston.
Food Pantry Volunteering: On Tuesday, March 18, at 9:00 a.m., Christ Church parishioners are once again invited to help those in need by stocking the food pantry at The Episcopal Church of the Atonement: 5073 East Capitol Street, SE. For more information, contact Chrissy Casey.
Spiritual Life Ministry: Lord, teach us to pray”: Christ Church’s Spiritual Life Ministry offers space for participants to learn about and practice various forms of contemplative prayer. Meetings are held on the first and third Sundays of the month at 3:30 p.m. (just before Choral Evensong), on the second floor of the Church building. For more information, contact parishioner Molly Peacock.
Choral Evensong: The next service of Choral Evensong will take place on Sunday, March 16, at 5:00 p.m. The liturgy will include works by Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell, as well as plainsong. A reception will follow. Evensong will continue on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month through May. Do join us.
Women’s Bible Study: All women of the parish and their guests are invited to participate in an exploration of the Book of Exodus, a captivating and poetic narrative that tells the story of God’s liberation of his people from slavery in Egypt and his gift of the law at Mount Sinai. The group will meet on Tuesdays, April 29, May 6 and 20, and June 3, at 6:00 p.m., in Keith Hall. Those who are unable to attend in person are welcome to participate virtually. For more information, contact Deacon Tiffany Clark.
