If you are heading out to kayak, please remember to be safe.
Whether you are an experienced paddler or just starting out, follow these tips to make sure you stay safe when paddling:
|
-
Know your skills, and the conditions and hazards of the water before you head out.
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
- Stay alert around other boats. You must have a sound-producing device to alert your presence.
- Dress appropriately for weather conditions and be prepared to get wet or enter the water.
-
Practice re-entry to your boat before you need to do it.
- Stay close to the shoreline so you can swim to land if you need help re-entering your boat.
- Kayak with others and share a float plan with a friend or family member that includes your route, people who will be with you, and when you expect to return.
|
Remember, wearing a life jacket is the simplest and most effective way to stay safe!
