Dear Colleagues,
As we mark the first week of spring instruction, there is a renewed sense of energy across our campuses — an inflection point that invites both reflection and momentum. With the final stretch of the academic year now in view, I want to acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of our faculty, staff, learners and clinicians. Your commitment to advancing health, discovery and compassionate care continues to define who we are as a community.
This is a meaningful time to support one another as we push toward June. The work taking place across our clinics, classrooms and laboratories is both demanding and deeply meaningful, and I am grateful for all you have contributed during a particularly challenging year.
Amid this busy season, there are many bright spots worth celebrating. In February, we recognized our pharmacy students for reaching more than 1,200 patients and delivering more than 2,800 medications or immunizations in the past two years through high-impact community engagement initiatives. In March, we proudly witnessed Match Day, as our medical students advanced to residency programs nationwide.
Our faculty continue to earn well-deserved honors. JoAnn Trejo was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Emily Lukacz was named president of American Urogynecologic Society; Linda Hill received the 2026 Health Sciences Excellence in Leadership Award; and several colleagues were recognized as the world’s most influential researchers on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list.
Our Sanford Stem Cell Institute continues to push boundaries, marking 18 launches of scientific research into space and sharing its pioneering work on national stages such as South by Southwest. Closer to home, a recent $250,000 award will expand the Center for Community Health’s ¡Más Fresco! Program, increasing access to fresh, nutritious food for families across San Diego County.
These are just a few examples of how our Health Sciences community lives our tripartite mission every day, through education, research and patient care. Together, we are shaping a healthier, more equitable future, and I am proud to work alongside you.
With gratitude,
