White Coat Ceremony Welcomes Future Doctors to the Medical Profession |
On October 10, the Larner College of Medicine’s Class of 2029 assembled at the University of Vermont’s historic Ira Allen Chapel to be presented with their white coats. This significant ceremony marks their formal entry into the medical profession, highlighting the responsibilities they assume as they wear the iconic physician’s white coat. Members of the class each have their unique story of what inspired them to study medicine.

| Larner Celebrates Research Excellence |
The Larner College of Medicine hosted its ninth annual Dean’s Celebration of Excellence in Research September 22–26, 2025. Led by Senior Associate Dean for Research Kate Tracy, Ph.D., this event celebrates the outstanding research contributions of faculty, research fellows, medical students, and graduate students, highlighting the breadth and depth of inquiry taking place across the college.

| BioLabs Center Holds Grand Opening |
Representatives from the University of Vermont, the Larner College of Medicine, BioLabs, center tenants, the city of Burlington, and local industries celebrated the formal opening of the BioLabs Innovation Center at UVM on September 23 at UVM’s Colchester Research Facility in Colchester, Vermont. The event included a ribbon cutting, speeches, and tours of the center’s extensive laboratory space.

| Investiture of Ramsey Herrington, M.D. |
The investiture of Ramsey Herrington, M.D., as the inaugural J. Bishop McGill, M.D.’46, Chair of Emergency Medicine was held on October 13 at the Larner College of Medicine. The chair was established in 2022 by longtime College of Medicine supporter and alumnus John McGill, M.D.’78, in honor of his father, who practiced and taught surgery at Fletcher Allen Health Care for more than 40 years.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Inspired by their own stressful experience navigating the couples match for residency, Larner graduate Anupama Balasubramanian, M.D.’25, and her then-fiancé, Harsh Moolani, M.D., who went to medical school at the University of Miami, have launched a free online resource called couplesmatchtool.com to help medical couples optimize their match lists—and medical students love it.

At the Larner College of Medicine’s clinical branch campus in Connecticut, Danbury Hospital’s Spratt Center for Simulation and Clinical Learning has achieved five-year accreditation from the American College of Surgeons. This prestigious accreditation provides more access to shared research opportunities, innovative curricula, and collaboration with simulation leaders.

Larner College of Medicine Green and Gold Professor of Surgical Research Brian Sprague, Ph.D., was among honorees inducted into the 45th class of University Scholars at the University of Vermont on September 17. Dr. Sprague, who received a monetary award in the category of basic and applied sciences, is nationally and internationally recognized for his research in breast cancer screening and surveillance.

In October, for Vermont Health Careers Awareness Month, a recent episode of the Southern Vermont Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Let’s Talk podcast featured Molly Hurd, a fourth-year medical student at the Larner College of Medicine. Hurd, an AHEC Scholar, shares her honest and inspiring journey into medicine and her hopes of practicing rural family health care.

Larner neuroscientist Brigitte Lavoie, Ph.D., was recently awarded an R01 grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases for the project “Modulation of gut and brain serotonin signaling by tryptophan producing bacteria.” Sayamwong Hammack, Ph.D., professor of psychological science and director of the neuroscience graduate program, is co-investigator.

The “My Why” campaign invites Larner researchers to share the personal motivations driving their work. By amplifying your stories, we can shine a light on the essential role of research and funding in advancing medicine, and create impactful content that celebrates your mission, your impact, and your “Why.”
