The Larner Medical Class of 2026 ‘Rides Into Residency’ |
|
|
On March 20, the Larner College of Medicine joined medical schools all across the country in celebrating Match Day, when more than 38,000 graduating medical students learned what their next step is after medical school. Larner’s Class of 2026—decked out in their finest Western wear, from cowboy boots and hats to suede and fringe in keeping with the “Ridin’ Into Residency!” Match Day theme—gathered with hundreds of family members and friends to discover their futures.

New Pediatrics Chair Appointed |
Following a national search, Judy Schaechter, M.D., division director at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control and professor emerita of pediatrics at the University of Miami, has been appointed the next chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Larner College of Medicine and UVM Health, effective July 1.

| Investiture of Toshiko Uchida, M.D. |
Larner Associate Dean for Curriculum and Professor of Medicine Toshiko Uchida, M.D., was invested as the inaugural Dr. Yvette Pigeon Professor of Medical Education on March 11. This appointment, in recognition of Dr. Uchida’s exceptional dedication to educating and mentoring students pursuing doctoral degrees, represents one of the highest honors the university can bestow upon a faculty member.

ACCOLADES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Produced by the Office of Medical Communications in collaboration with a Larner student editorial team, the 2025 edition of The Red Wheelbarrow, the literary and visual arts magazine of the Larner College of Medicine community, has just been published. This year’s edition features 33 written and visual works, with additional audio and visual artworks to be found on the Red Wheelbarrow website.

|
Matthew Caporizzo, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular physiology and biophysics at the Larner College of Medicine, has been named the recipient of the Geneen Charitable Trust Award for Coronary Heart Disease Research. His proposal, “Defining the Extracellular Regulation of Diastolic Dysfunction,” was chosen as the sole application from UVM, one of only 14 institutions invited to apply.

A group of faculty from the Larner College of Medicine headed by Associate Dean for Curriculum Toshiko Uchida, M.D., has received a grant from UVM’s AI Innovation Fund to develop a process to use artificial intelligence (AI) to accurately, objectively, and securely score notes for Clinical Skills Exams, instead of the current time-intensive process of manual scoring by faculty.

AcademyHealth’s Child Health Services Research Interest Group has selected Larner Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine Christian Pulcini, M.D., M.P.H., M.Ed., as the recipient of its 2026 Early Career Investigator Award, in recognition of his work in child health services research. The award will be presented at the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting in Seattle on May 30.

The Cellular, Molecular, and Biomedical Sciences (CMB) program at the Larner College of Medicine dominated a preliminary round of the 2026 Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) for medical and nursing / health sciences graduate students held on Thursday, March 12. The winners—all CMB Ph.D. candidates—were Matthew Owens, Madeline McTigue, Maggie Trout, and Alexa Price. The UVM-wide 3MT® is on April 15.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition | During Research Week, on Wednesday, April 15, 4:00–5:30 p.m., at Fleming Museum Room 101, Ph.D. students from across UVM will present a compelling oration on their research project and its significance in just three minutes—180 seconds!—in language accessible to a non-specialist audience.
